Word automatically does two even if you hit space once so this debate is moot

Used to be two. Use one now.

That said, I still use two and have never been called out for it.

Part of my profession is document formatting and copy editing. You old and misguided souls can continue to use two spaces if it makes you feel better, as it only takes me five seconds to do a search and replace and correct it.

Two is the only answer.

Only a poorly taught individual would say one.

Find and replace ". " (period+space) with ". " (period+space+space). That will give you an extra length on your thesis.

That's what my plan was if I needed two spaces. I'm just trying to write as much as a I can right now, formatting will come later.

Looks like MSU doesn't specify about space after period. They got a guideline about everything else though.

MLA Handbook FAQ:

How many spaces should I leave after a period or other concluding mark of punctuation?

Publications in the United States today usually have the same spacing after a punctuation mark as between words on the same line. Since word processors make available the same fonts used by typesetters for printed works, many writers, influenced by the look of typeset publications, now leave only one space after a concluding punctuation mark. In addition, most publishers’ guidelines for preparing electronic manuscripts ask authors to type only the spaces that are to appear in print. Because it is increasingly common for papers and manuscripts to be prepared with a single space after all punctuation marks, this spacing is shown in the examples in the MLA Handbook and the MLA Style Manual. As a practical matter, however, there is nothing wrong with using two spaces after concluding punctuation marks unless an instructor or editor requests that you do otherwise.

One. Back when typewriters were used, each character space was the same width, so two spaces were necessary to separate sentences. Word processors adjust for this automatically now, so one space is all that's needed.

It has probably been answered already (not gonna look), but for MLA, one or two spaces are fine as long as it is consistent. For APA, two are required. My clinical group had this same discussion when we were preparing our final project in nursing school this past semester.
