Doesn't word automatically change it to 1.5 when you use a space after a period?

I always use two when typing. Old habit that is hard to break. When I'm typing on my phone I just use one. Double tapping the spacebar gives that period and one space.

I've trained myself to use two spaces and I'm not stopping now.

Writing my thesis as we speak. I really fricking hope it's one space.

or make the periods 2 fonts bigger. It can increase the page length by about a page for every 8 pages typed(double spaced)

Two. That is what I was taught in writing classes all the way through school. I didn't know that this writing style had changed.

One if you're texting your dope dealer or loling at a Bieber tweet.
Two if you're a fricking grownup.

One space, unless typing a manuscript in Courier font.
The two space rule was created in the days of typewriters that always used monospaced type (like courier), meaning every character occupied the same amount of horizontal space and the distance between each character was the same, so a double space between sentences made it easier to read and separate one sentence from the other.

Two was standard for manual typewriters.
With word processors, letter spacing was automatically adjusted where a "I" doesn't take the space of an "M" and two spaces after a period was no longer needed.
ETA. What he ^ said.

now, 20 years ago it was two spaces.
This is correct. I had a technical writing seminar a couple of years ago and the instructor referenced a writing manual (I forget the name) and said that the rules have changed. I like to mix it up myself. :)

Word automatically does two even if you hit space once so this debate is moot
