I have been to every Southern state besides Kentucky. Didn't spend a ton of time in Arkansas or Virginia (or West Virginia if we are treating it as Southern), but still, I have to say picking the best overall state in the South is certainly a bit like picking the fastest nose tackle or the funniest sitcom on CBS.

While there are no real winners, I'd go Florida, Texas, Georgia, Virginia, Louisiana, North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina, Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi.

ETA: If we are including Missouri and West Virginia, I'd go with:

Florida, Texas, Georgia, Virginia, Louisiana, North Carolina, Missouri, Tennessee, South Carolina, Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, West Virginia.

Don't know what to do with Kentucky. I'd probably put it around with South Carolina.

The only thing I can say definitively is that Mississippi is dead last.

Lived in Wilmington, NC for 2 years...loved it, but missed my home state of South Carolina every day.

Too many transplants in NC now...that includes the opposite side of the state in areas such as Maggie Valley, Cherokee, Asheville, etc. They've lost their overall "southerness".

My vote goes to South Carolina as long as you avoid the tourist trap areas of Myrtle Beach where Ohioans seem to have taken over as well as Hilton Head where the same phenomenon has occurred. Charleston is absolutely breathtaking and while it has its share of tourists, they are just that...tourists. They go home after visiting.

We have the midlands which is also full of history and small towns where gorgeous plantations can still be seen in all their glory. It's almost like taking a step back in time visually but not politically.

Then we have the mountains, or the foothills as some would prefer to call them. The upstate area is absolutely stunning (outside of Pickens County..LOL!) and there are multiple things to see and do.

And yes, there are the homegrown Carolina girls. There's a reason the song "Carolina Girls" was penned by General Johnson and The Chairmen of the Board. And yes, they were referring to the state of SC and NOT the state of NC. We also are the home of Beach Music and where the dance "The Shag" was originated.

So, my vote goes to South Carolina.

I live is Mississippi and the only good part of it is the Coast unless you hunt or fish. Plenty of great hunting and fishing all over the state. I love living on the coast, but it is nothing like the rest of Mississippi.

We have great food, things to do, and friendly people

Charleston and non-Myrtle Beach/HH beaches/islands are great. Greenville and "mtn" areas too. But I'm not sure that's enough to carry the whole state. I do find the people nice though.

As much as I love NC, the folks their seem to get less folksy every time I go.

The Highlands/Cashiers area is a favorite, due to proximity to Atlanta. But that very proximity can turn it into Buckhead North, which sucks arse. And the trustafarians and faux hippie homeless looking people in Asheville are equally annoying. Charlotte has this odd snooty air to it that i just don't get--too many bankers i guess. Raleigh/Durham/CH did nothing for me. Black Mountain, just outside Asheville had the best folks.
