OP is right. The fact that it's gotten 14 up votes and 33 down votes says a lot about the problem.

It is my life's ambition to die of lung cancer. Or cirrhosis of the liver. Or both.

Yeah, those men you describe died by the age of 50 on average. Yeah that's the life.

Working 12 hours a day in a stuffy factory is living? Coughing up blood daily and not being able to walk up a flight of stairs due to lung cancer is living?

I don't see why people romanticize the olden days. They sucked. The men back then were miserable. That's why we spent so much time and money trying to get where we are today technologically speaking.

"Real men" do whatever they want. They don't try to live up to a universal standard or set of goals. They do whatever makes them happy.

If they happen to be married and have kids, they should be good fathers and husbands.

No you idiot. Real men wear three piece suits into their factory job where they take in harmful toxins from the air and then they stumble into a bar and drink 6 pints and 11 shots of whisky before going home to beat their wives over the condition of the pot roast.

I'm not talking about Alpha and Beta nonsense; that's always existed and always will. I'm talking about men just generally being men. Talking like men. Smoking cigarettes, cigars, pipes. Meeting together in groups, free from any outside malevolence. Being together in an estrogen free environment, smoking or drinking or doing neither; just conversing. My grandfather talks about these sorts of conversations often, and I've never even seen one. He talks about meeting around a newspaper, a common issue, a problem. I've seen that here, but not in the way he envisions. In his stories, alcohol and cigarette smoke are in the air. Pipes. People speaking French because it was God's language to them. Reveling in tradition, culture and close relationships.

Where I live, there are three joints that every day the "Men" get together and shoot the shite. I was with them this morning.

Hendo, you might be overgeneralizing almost as much as the OP.
