But IMO I prefer people to work - and a full time worker should be able to pay his family basic needs w/o govt assistance.

Someone who works a job that only pays minimum wage should be arrested for choosing to have a family. Don't have a fricking kid if you can't take care of yourself. How hard is that? 98% of workers who make minimum wage are under 22, so it really shouldn't be so fricking hard.

And that's exactly what I do. It's not my fault you chose to have kids.

That made no sense.

not even close.

quote:

Minimum-wage workers are older than they used to be. Their average age is 35, and 88 percent are at least 20 years old. Half are older than 30, and about a third are at least 40.

These patterns are somewhat new. In 1979, 27 percent of low-wage workers (those making $10.10 per hour or less in today’s dollars) were teenagers, compared with 12 percent in 2013, according to John Schmitt and Janelle Jones

Whatever it is it's not an out of high school job.

Flipping burgers is not, and should not provide for a family. Life is rewards and punishments.

I disagree. Someone owns these burger places. They had to start somewhere, from one store to franchising out across the country. Those guys that are millionaires started out flipping burgers. They just took it to the next level.

That's like .0001% of people who flip burgers. It's just a line to inspire the dregs of society.

That says more about the new generation of shits than anything else. Every generation is worst than the last, the ones failing now, prove it.

It says half are over 30 and the very oldest millennials are 35, so i guess gen x isn't all it is made out to be.

They include those making up to and "slightly over" $10.10/hour (40% more than MW), so I assume their goal was to make it appear as if MW earners are older. That article should probably be disregarded. They also include retirees who intentionally take MW jobs just to stay busy, but haven't necessarily earned MW their whole life (and most probably didn't). Their income is supplemented with other sources.

It's a standard of living wage. Basically it's a way for the lazy to continue to be lazy or the "dreamers" to continue to "live their dream" without actually trying to chase their dream.

You'll notice a lot of artists and rich guilt liberals calling for a living wage because they know the "poor artist" can't make it on their own doing "art".

frick em. Learn to sell your art or go learn a money making trade.

One where you can support a family of 4 above the poverty line? About $11.50.

Buffet is right on this. Support it through the tax code. He wants to expand EITC. I'd change the way the personal exemption works and calculate it based on hours worked (2080 standard for management). If you work 2 jobs, you get 2 exemptions.
That's the way we subsidize business - through the tax code.

The term "living wage" can't be the same for everyone. It varies based upon how many children you have, and unfortunately we can't stop the poors from making more children.

When I first got out of undergrad I was making 28k, supporting myself, and paying for grad school in cash.

Enough to have food to eat, a place to stay and still be able to send half of the wage back to Mexico.

As a single guy I calculated a $50,000 salary would be more than enough to live comfortably in the South with a nice apartment, new car, ect. But hopefully with my degree I'll make 2-3 times that lol
