Good for the SGA. I can't imagine my fraternity being forced to let some of you in.

They may but as stated earlier, the black congressional caucus doesn't. There is no clearer use of racism today than that by them ( as well as many of ther groups on obamas side

Doesn't it always amaze one that these hand wringers who are the first to cry racism, tend to look the other way when the shoe is on the other foot?

It's about as amazing as one contends that a group with aims of closing gaps in America that is closed (whether right or wrong) is the excuse for the regressive thought process of exclusivity not based on merits or true ideology, but the melanin count in the thinnest portion of the human body.

Let me guess....you're a lawyer who writes insurance policies? Do I win something?

I have taken one law class.

Never again.

I am predominately white, and an IFC fraternity man myself. It just seems like a fool's argument when people actually argue this point of "we are exclusive" and the basis is if they are colored or not.

And remember, the actives wanted the black girls in this instance. It's simple minded crotchety women who threatened the sororities with pulling funding.

A couple of things to remember here...

I think there's a fair possibility that if the university begins to require oversight of new members, that the greeks will go off campus. If you want precedent, look up why Comus, Momus, and Proteus stopped rolling at Mardi Gras. The greek system has enough money to buy property and houses off campus, where the university will have zero say.

Further, does everyone here really have the stomach for the administration to start dictating who they can and can't allow?

What about minority scholarships? What about race based college admissions? Will every student have equal opportunity to a scholarships dedicated to minority xyz? How far are we making the system fair here?

Personally, I think it's a private org, let them do as they please. If they get passed by the wheels of time, so be it.

I think you underestimate how much cheaper it is for a greek chapter to be located on campus with all the university subsidies, underestimate how much it would cost to run the same thing off campus, and overestimate the amount of financial resources most chapters have.

And if you think a chapter has problems with the university, try to locate a house in a residential area. I promise you, the neighbors will be far less accomodating to parking, noise, and late partying than a university would be.

From a university's standpoint, if a chapter decides to locate off campus, the response will be, "see ya later." The cost benefit ratio of even having a greek system at all is heavily weighted to the cost side, in the eyes of most college administrators.

And guess what, Most of your alums have moved on with their lives and don't give much of a shite any more. Certainly not enough to shell out the kind of dollars we're talking about to fund a chapter free of all university subsidies and control.

I'm a greek alum, but it is what it is. We thought we had a lot of leverage when I was an undergrad, too. Only after getting a little real world experience can I look back and see how ridiculous it was to think a bunch of 20 year old drunkards could dictate terms to anybody.

TL;DR version: Adapt to the modern world or get left behind.
