One of my friends who is white is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi incorporated. No discrimination, just go through the process, which is very tough.

Discrimination is showed when a student isn't even allowed to enter the process of becoming a member of an organization.

How many black kids are really trying to rush the "white" sororities and fraternities anyways? At my school it was very few but the ones that did usually got a bid...somewhere. Admittedly usually not one of the better houses though. Although the black chicks seemed to fair better than the black guys.

Eta: so are they not allowed to rush at all? If so, that's fricked up.

I thought they turned it down cause integration was already happening and this was just a statement of a resolution not real action.

Is it legal? Sure. Is it racist as frick? Yes. Don't try to disguise it as freedom.

Are you consistent in this belief?

What is the policy at other SEC schools?

I must say that this is not a good look for UA.

Two steps back. It's 2014. Not 1963.

Just another symbol of racism and bigotry that so many in the South want to disassociate with but cannot because of the idiotic few that insist on reinforcing it. It's shameful and backwards. No other way to say it.

They accept members of different races.

Wasn't there something a few months ago about the girls in a sorority wanted to bid a black girl, but the alums and whatnot wouldn't allow it?

freedom =/= discrimination based on race

Sorry, scruffy.

And this just goes to show how big of a shithole the state of Alabama is

Bingo. Is a black dude allowed to rush DEKE, Kappa Sig and other various fraternities? Hell no, I get into parties but few black people are really even allowed in. Except for athletes. It's blatant discrimination and it's fricked up.

Were they wearing white tennis shoes. Can't come in if you're wearing those.

I agree, but it's a:

So you know what that means.

I won't be a part of an organization that limits membership solely on the basis of race.

But I don't care if it just works out that way because of pretty common cultural differences. Not a ton of texas country music loving, conservative, fly fishing black folks in the SEC, unless I'm missing something.

No, you are wrong. Denying membership based on race is racial discrimination. You want to put lipstick on it by calling it a private matter, then go ahead.

No, they may deny membership on many different criteria (see the comments on the article from the black girl in AKA). They deny membership to other girls who are ugly, fat, don't share the same socio-economic standing, dress a certain way, act a certain way, walk a certain way, etc. It's not like every white girl that signs up automatically gets a bid.

IIRC, it was pressure from the alumni that caused this stir. Sounds like an internal problem.

I don't begrudge a historically black fraternity or sorority for turning down whites. Like many have stated, why would you want to be part of an organization that doesn't want you anyway. I also love how people think that these greek organizations are some sort of Masonic club that gets you boosted to top positions like CEO's and the POTUS.
