It is July 11, and so is the Windy City Smokeout

We're likely going to that on saturday.

Also, Mag Mile is good because it's closest to the beaches, shopping, transportation, and a bunch of restaurants. Loop is decent as well, but less going on there on the weekend.

As for steakhouses, here's a good article/map.

Lots of chains in the top 20. Harry Caray's is not listed as a top 20, but it's fantastic, and local. Very close to Hubbard street so you could do a bar crawl before or after dinner.

Also, a lot of celebrities go to Chicago Cut. So that's pretty good.

do you mean this place?

Yes...I ate there last Friday and it was a very wonderful and unique experience.

First of all this place is right across the street from where the 1929 Valentine's Day massacre took place (Al Capone)...you are correct, its not your usual place...they only accept cash. that's right---CASH ONLY ALL OTHERS CAN POUND SAND.

When we got there there was about 30 or 40 people already waiting on seats and every table in that tiny place is full...there is no person at the front putting names on the list...in fact there is no list!

you have to find the "guy wearing the tie" and track him down and tell him you need a table for x. Then he says, ok, I'll come find you when your table is ready...we squeeze into the little bar area and have a drink and 20 minutes later guy in the tie comes and taps us for our table.

The place is really cozy, old schoool wooden booths with coat handers on each...dim lighting and though small and busy, still quiet enough to have a nice conversation. They make pizza pot pies and they make them in bowls and the turn the bowl updside down and dump it out on your plate. it takes a half hour to make the pie. your only choices are "sausage or no sausage", "mushrooms or no mushrooms" or "wheat or white crust).

The Pizza pies were incredible and like nothing i've ever had. But first the three of us shared a giant Mediterranean bread which was the highlight of the menu for us. this thing is the size of a X large pizza and they have 4 or 5 homemade dipping sauces that come with it. so freaking awesome.

We topped it off with their vanilla ice cream with rum desert. so damn good. had to unbutton the pants to walk out.

All safe but Magnificent Mile would be my recommendation because it's more convenient to walk to everything. There are lots of hotels in that area.

I just got back from a 3 day trip in Chicago and stayed a block from the magnificent mile, that's definitely the area I would recommend. My wife Priceline'd the Sheraton, rooms were whatever but the property was very nice.

He hop on hop off bus tour is a great way to get around town and see a bunch of sights.

If you're talking about the sheraton on the river, that's a great location. Good views, close to everything, nice place.

So I should look for the hotels listed as downtown? What is the magnificent mile

Magnificent Mile is a strip with basically every store you can think of (pretty much an outdoor galleria) and good restaurants. It's where I would stay before I moved here.

Theatre district and downtown are both good

all museums deny any giants, but there are thousands of them and thousands of newspaper accounts as well....

if you're up for it....

and you have to go to AL's Beef, just west of the rock n roll mcdonalds

That sounds like an urban myth...not unlike the chocolate shake at weiner circle at 3am, only difference being that the chocolate shake is real.

Loved the girl and the goat.
The field museum wasn't that great at all.
The Sears tower was cool if you've never been in a super tall building.
Alinea is a crazy restaurant worth googling.

If you want to have a beach day, head down to North Ave Beach. Great beach, swimming, "sightseeing", close to downtown. Architectural Tour is a must as well. It's fantastic and about $27 a person. I've been a resident here for 14 years, but done the tour 3 times. It's a little more crowded on the weekend.

You call that a great beach? Damn you really need a trip down south.

I'm pretty sure most people know Alinea since its one of the most famous restaurants in the world at this point.

You really got into Alinea? Lucky bastard.

Trying to go to the July 4th Cubs game. Any recommendations on where to sit at Wrigley or any particular method of getting tix I should know about? Thanks

The OF bleachers are probably still closed due to renovations. I scored seats down the 3B line about 9 rows up for $60/seat on stubhub. I was really happy with them. There were also a lot of scalpers out on gameday

We stayed on the Magnificent Mile and there was a bunch to do within walking distance. Lots of shopping

All the bleachers are open. Have been since mid June. That's definitely the place to sit if you want a more fun/rowdy experience. Tickets will be the most expensive bleacher tickets you've ever come across though (face is between about $27-$66 depending on the game). Right now stubhub has them for $67 for the 4th.

Seating there is general admission, so worth trying to get in before the first pitch.
