What I would reccomend is using Hotwire for a hotel. I know a lot of people do not like your hotel being a crapshoot, but with Chicago there are so many nice hotels that you can stay in a 4 star for around $70 or a 5 star for just over $100. There are about 4 different areas you can choose in the vicinity of downtown, so you won't be booked somewhere that is not walking distance from where you want to be.

Hell, I got a suite for New Years at a 5 star for $135

Adding to the list. Try to hit a street fest. There's at least one every weekend in the summer, and it's a cool way to get some local flavor. Beers, music, food, good people watching.

What weekend is the OP coming to town?

Segway tour was amazing and the architecture tour by boat is an absolute must.

That's pretty much the only one I'd suggest avoiding. It's a shitshow, food is way overpriced, and it's mostly tourists. If you're set on going, just don't go on a weekend. It's July 8-12.

We are going as well. Staying at Sofitel I think. Don't know where that is exactly, but seems like it'd be in a good area.

What's a good steakhouse rec?

Also looking for this. Morton's original steakhouse is in Chicago but I worry that is just another chain. We are staying at the Conrad on the Mag Mile.

Gonna check out Billy Goat Tavern below street level then head to an afternoon Cubs game for sure. Everything else is open...

North Michigan Avenue from the river to Oak Street. It's the Rodeo Drive of Chicago.

Lots of good suggestions here. I would add the outdoor concerts at the Ravinia Festival. Train from downtown lets you out at the gate. There's nothing like a concert under the stars.

Do if I chose Downtown, the Magnificent Mile, and the Theater District, would those all be safe choices?

DITKAS WAS AWESOME. I actually met Mike Ditka there last Thursday night. Steaks were incredible and they have a guy singing sinatra and Dean Martin tunes who has an incredible voice. It's tight off the mag mile area too.

If you mean this place, just a heads-up to those who don't know. You don't actually get pizza there. It's a "pot pie" of cheese, sauce, and shite. Some people absolutely love it. But, it's not your normal pie.

Take a boat tour with the Chicago Architecture Foundation. It was amazing.

Also, the Museum of Science and Industry was incredibly cool. We went in a recreated coal mine and took a tour of the U-Boat. I wanted to go the Field Museum but there are so many natural history museums out there, we thought the science and industry would be better. It was incredibly hands on and interesting for all age levels. We could have spent a day there.

All safe but Magnificent Mile would be my recommendation because it's more convenient to walk to everything. There are lots of hotels in that area.
