I've been several times and really enjoyed it. I'm 30 btw and it's nice to just get away.

My Grandpaw used to go yearly with the KCs and I plan to go in the future.

One question though, several of yall know people that go with groups. What's the reasoning behind that? I'd find it much more effective to go alone and not with friends.

I've been to Grand Coteau (also run by Jesuits) for a silent retreat and it was great. Will probably go again next yr.

I haven't been to Manresa before but I've been on my fair share of retreats. My assumption is that it's easier to get people there if they sign up as a group. So getting various mens clubs to find a weekend that works is better logistically.

When I was in treatment, they sent a group of guys there on a retreat a couple times of year. Ive seen many of completely broken people find whatever it is they were looking for there. It comes highly recommended from the people i know that have been there.

interesting to me that every single poster in this thread who has actually attended posted positive comments and most all say they are going back again...

this has grabbed my interest...

Fun fact: Tom Benson goes on these retreats quite often. He usually brings a Saints player or two when he goes.

I have been to Manresa about 15 times. I enjoy it and always come back refreshed. I participate in mast things but you can do as much or as little as you want. The grounds are beautiful. The food is very good. Homemade biscuits with breakfast. Red beans and spaghetti and meatballs for lunch. Fried catfish, pork roast, and chicken for dinner. The Abita Beer people are in my group and they generously keep us well stocked. My only complaint is that the wine they serve with dinner is not very good (it is free). We always bring our own. It is relaxing to just sit outside on the rocking chairs as long as the mosquitos are not bad. I do fine with the silence.

I have been asked to go for years by my FIL and have never gone. I was afraid you had to "open up" in front of others and definitely not something I wanted to do in front of him lol

It is a phenomenal spiritual experience and I recommend it with enthusiasm. I have been going for about 15 years and have found it spiritually refreshing. The facilities are beautiful and the food is great, sure. But the silence and beautiful surroundings permit you a level of prayerfulness and reflection that is unmatched.

Definitely not an "opening up" as a group type deal. You can go to confession if you like or just go meet with one of the priests and talk to someone if you need to.

The entire retreat is based on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola and it is run by the Jesuit priests. It's Catholic, but there are several protestant groups that go as well. The weekend I used to attend had about 60 protestant men drive down from Memphis to attend. You'd never know as most all of them attended mass. I'm pretty sure a lot of them even received communion.

You can go and not have to say a word to anyone for like 36 hrs. It's great.

It's free.

They do ask that you give what you can, or about $400 if you can afford it, or more if you are able.

Nothing like that. You are not even supposed to talk. Everyone is made to feel very comfortable there. I highly recommend it.

My dad is a deacon and has been going for 6 -7 years, he asked me and my brother and brother in laws to go every year and I haven't been yet. I told him this year I'll definitely be there, we go in September.

I wasn't sure how I would enjoy it but after this thread, I'm looking forward to it. I'm 30 by the way
