I have been kicking around the idea of attending one. Wasn't sure since I am protestant. However, this thread is really making me want to go. Good info in here.

I burn 3 a day while I am there. I even bring a bunch for others incase someone else wants one.

I've gone to Manresa for the better part of the past 10 years and have regretted those couple of times I didn't go. Do yourself a favor and go!!! I usually try to attend everything, but it's definitely not something you have to do.
I go over 4th of July weekend, but am looking to change. I brought my bike and rode about 18 miles on the levee just enjoying the quiet solitude of the river.
My paw-paw went for probably 30 years.

Apologize for the questions but the positive comments have perked my interest

Each retreatant gets his own room and bathroom. Much like a dorm room

And it's free? Seems too good to be true. I'm pretty intrigued.

While it is "free", you are asked to contribute if you can. The cost would be approximately $400 per man for the 3 day run. There are some that may not contribute some years and make up for it in later years when they are financially able.
There are also some anonymous "heavy hitters" that give upwards of $100k. Manreesa is the flagship retreat house and it helps fund some other retreat houses "in the family" around the nation that aren't as financially sound. The grounds are the old campus of Louisiana College in Convent, LA. Those buildings are very old and maintaining them to the beautiful standard that they do requires a substantial amount of money. I always give more than the $400 that it would cost for my stay.

Know some guys who have gone. Seems kinda weird, but they said they got a lot out of it. I guess it's not much different than spending the weekend by yourself at the camp.

I'm not religious at all and I enjoyed it.
My FIL brings a few cigars and some scotch and just sips and smokes during the free time in the evenings. Even brought some whiskey and a smoke for me.
Id put a dip in and go walk the grounds. It's incredibly quiet. I even took a couple of naps, which I can't seem to do at home. The instructions (talks) aren't bad, and if you have a good leader for the weekend they can be enjoyable.
I didn't think it was my thing at all, but it's very relaxing and you get a lot of quiet time to think.
ETA A few times Id go walk to the river and just watch the boats pass. Your free time is exactly that, yours. Do whatever you want during that time.

To answer some of the previous questions:
quote:A lot of people smoke cigars outside. When the weather is nice and the mosquitos are not too bad, we often sit on the porch with a cigar and a cocktail.
Cigars?
quote:These are a thing of the past. Since the renovations a few years ago, each room has a private full bath. One person to a room.
Community bathrooms
quote:While they don't charge you a set amount and donations are left to your discretion, this is not meant to be a free vacation. Everyone is expected to pay on the honor system according to his means. A destitute person in need of spiritual help is welcome to go for free.
Free?

My Manresa retreat is this weekend but family commitments are keeping me home this year. My dad has gone something like 40 straight years.

I've never done Manresa but I have attended an Acts retreat. Changed my life.

I've been going Easter week every year for the last 5 years. I was by all means skeptical the first time. I look forward to it every year....the best sleep, food and environment I get all year. I bring a Lob Wedge and about 4 golf balls and chip the grounds all week.

I'm one of two lead captains for group 49 and I just completed my 31st consecutive retreat at Manresa. I'd recommend Manresa to any man of any faith. To register for a retreat go to manresala.org,select the retreat tab and then the scheduling a retreat at manresa tab. This does not guarantee a spot, but it will get you in the system. I can be reached at 20legend@cox.net if anyone has a question or needs help.
