From my experiences?
Def not.
The exploitation in the south is unparalleled.
It's basically "I got mine, the rest of y'all can go f yourselves"
That sucks. Your anecdotal experience is opposite of most everyone else, bad luck I guess.

I have seen neighbors and friends helping each other at a rate that is simply amazing and inspiring to behold.
It really is amazing and makes me proud to be from Louisiana. I think that for the most part this is true of all americans though...just with all the hurricanes it's more common to see it happen in La.

I've heard of contractors (and Mexicans) not showing up for an agreed upon job because someone else offered more money. I know of contractors charging at least 3 times the going rate for work because of supply and demand (not a scam, but it sucks considering all the work being done for free by so many).
Sounds like Nashville the last two years minus the free work. Terrible based on situation, but will always be prevalent in a capitalist society. Beats the alternative.

Possibly, but I doubt it.
Many of the political ideologies and corruption down here support my stances, anyways.
But sticking your head in the sand is easier for many

That's awesome. When it flooded in SC last year, it was as proud as I have ever been to be a member of the community. As bad as it sucked, it really brought everyone together.
Everyone was out of work for the better part of a week and just working at stranger's homes. And people would roll down the street with 100's of chick fil a sandwiches and subs and just hand them out. It was great.

I went the harbor frieght in Metairie the day before yesterday with a buddy and bought a ton of hammers, prybars, hatchets, tape measures and knick knacks. Then went to habitat for humanity on Elysian Fields and bought buckets of nails (they have the like 80% off there) and sent it all up with a mutual friend. Woke up today to one person in our group claiming that one of the guys who went up to the Denham area then started a Go Fund me to recoup his costs and may even be selling the stuff we all paid for. Kind of upset about it. It wasn't much anyway.

If I set up a food truck to feed the contractors and people redoing their houses in an area with no more viable restaurants, but I charge instead of giving that food away, am I also "taking advantage" of the situation?
It sucks, but the charity will only last for a few more days. If that.
I used to do disaster relief. About to jump back in it because it is extremely profitable.
And that fact means I will still be helping those areas weeks and months after all the volunteers have stopped.

I have a buddy in south LA that owns a mold abatement company and is currently begging for help on FB. Dude is about to make bank.
FA? If so I did some work for them after Katrina. $20+ an hour to take pictures of mold. Great Job.

That's great but all areas do disaster relief.
Stand back and watch the amount of fraud that takes place during this recovery, though.
It's sad more than anything

It's too bad it takes disasters to do that...when the floods recede the petty shite comes back to the forefront

I remember seeing several stories about people from Louisiana and the South heading up to the east coast to help for Sandy. Funny. I haven't seen a story stating how East Coasters are on their way down here. Hell it is has barely been a blip on the national radar.

No doubt. All these out of town contractors roll in and take advantage of people, its pathetic.

I agree that buying up all of the equipment in a effort to control the market is BS.

Wait, so you're saying this "Cajun Navy" guy is scamming us off the backs of heroic volunteers?

same boat here. Just registered to remove gasses from refrigeration units. (gasses I recover I can use or sell too) Plus I have two 16' trailers I can put to work now hauling debris.

Oh. The out of town contractors bought the equipment despite not having the infrastructure to house it?
Got it
