A friend of mine is a small-job contractor/handyman. Great guy, honest, busts his arse, etc. Was always looking for jobs. Had a damn massive heart attack and surgery a couple weeks ago. He'ls alive, but won't be able to do that kind of work anymore. I feel so bad for him because he would have been set for a long time with work now, and he would have treated people right and done quality work for a fair price.

Don't act like this is a normal every other day where these people are just sitting around shopping on the internet.

Something like this happened to me after Gustav. The contractor who I hired to do my roof was someone I knew, who had a good reputation. When Gustav hit, he had so many people calling him to do work, he got greedy and didn't turn down anyone.

One day I came home to 8 to 10 mexicans in my yard and on my roof. They had the shingles and other trash in front of the front door, they were working like they didn't give a frick. The next day, the contractor dropped off a completely different crew because the guys he first hired went with another contractor. In the end it bit the contractor in the arse because he took on so much work and wasn't able to keep the mexicans he was hiring.

I would assume this will be going on now so it is definitely something to be aware of.

It's a more efficient use of time than driving all over town looking for something you may not find.

You don't see an issue with people having to work/wait longer to remove moisture from their homes right now? Mold sets in and the damage becomes worse - making more monetary opportunity for others. For those with only 2-10 inches of water in their houses, every hour counts.

Do you know what kind of tools are required to do most of this work? Bare hands.

You're making a huge deal about people buying up tools and then holding them for resale, but where is this actually happening? Being sold out of hammers and what not was a given even if they forced people to buy only one per person. I wish everyone had the tools available, but I'm suspicious that there is some sort of widespread collusion that is interfering with that ability.

My BIL hired 4 Mexicans yesterday in front of Home Depot to gut his rent house. Paid them $250 ea, they were done in 4 hours.

Then a guy across the street offered to by the house as is.

Worked out really well for my BIL as he has flood insurance to pay off what he owes on the mortgage.

Exactly, and whether people like it or not outside help is required to speed things up.

As for raising prices, sure there is some of that; but a lot of the reason prices go up is because the workers command overtime premiums by working over 40 hours a week.

If you want the work done, if you want it expedited; that costs more than if you want it done during regular hours at a regular pace.

And then you have to realize contractors work on small margins and see a chance to boost their margins to pay themselves extra then they are going to do that. And why not, they too will work 60-80 hours a week too.

There will be good reasons to raise rates and there will be price gouging and some shysters. Buyer beware is the key. Try and get a reference.

Met with two VP's from my company yesterday in NOLA, one lives in ATL area, the other in the Boston area. They both said if it wasn't for me they wouldn't have a clue about what was going on down here.

We lost our home in Katrina, but sure, I'm clueless. The mold issues are prevalent in the walls and insulation and that can basically be done by hand if you had to. Is it really a shock that Home Depot is out of floor remover tools though? You're insinuating this is the result of people exploiting the supply. I'm contesting that by saying that the vast majority were probably bought by individuals who need them since the damage is overwhelming in many areas.

You just said people could gut their houses with their bare hands, never mind that many of these people are elderly like my grand father. So yeah, what you said was clueless, Katrina or not.
