Floor removal tools and machinery are being brought up in bulk from hardware stores before individuals can purchase. Those that bought in bulk are now renting out that same equipment for 10 times the price.
I've heard of contractors (and Mexicans) not showing up for an agreed upon job because someone else offered more money. I know of contractors charging at least 3 times the going rate for work because of supply and demand (not a scam, but it sucks considering all the work being done for free by so many).
I'd like to have some place local where we can start listing the names of these people for future reference.

Wouldn't be a bad idea. A lot of people found their way to TD during the flooding

yeah this sucks, but in all honesty this is the one way you can ensure the area gets an excess of workers to do the work. it's a give-take situation

Or post it here.

Nah, a lot of these guys are coming in from out of state and setting up temporary shop (one I know is from Dallas). Not only does that suck for the residents but also sucks for the honest local contractors here that have to compete with them but also have to deal with personal loss themselves.

I have a buddy in south LA that owns a mold abatement company and is currently begging for help on FB. Dude is about to make bank.

carpetbaggers of the 21st century

There will not be enough "local" contractors to handle the amount of work in a timely manner.

Where's Grassy1 to defend these these guys for covering the added costs associated with doing business during a natural disaster?????

Well then that is the going rate now based on supply and demand that you mentioned.

Fwiw, I think your thread is an exaggeration but
These extra people doesn't suck for the residents. If you only had local people doing that type of work, it would never get finished. This is a monumental task

My brother in law does sales for a mold abatement/flood recovery type business and hes been run out of some neighborhoods.
Not gouging, just trying to make a living. I get both sides of the perspective though.

I doubt it is Yankees doing it. There are always unsavory actors out there.
Regarding that "Southern Hospitality" remark.
I have seen neighbors and friends helping each other at a rate that is simply amazing and inspiring to behold.
I grew up in NY but have lived in BR for 15 years. The people of S.La are simply the best, hands down, bar none.

I'm not denying they have the right to do so. Charge as much as they want. My issue is most people who've lost everything are willing to do the same work for free but, with the combo of people buying up equipment to gouge us, aren't able to do so.
They can make all the money they want, it just doesn't look good for them when so many are sacrificing to help others.
