I rescued one that is a mix. I have him to troll all the internet badasses who say they will shoot a dog on the spot. So far, no shots fired.

I've known a boxer to snap at children that play too rough.. but that's the end of it.

They typically don't continue on to kill.. when a pit bull gets in that mode and smells blood.. they are ruthless.. I've seen shots fired into them and they still pursue their target. It's wild.

Pit bull fear is unwarranted for the most part. Perhaps if you lived someplace that had an active dog fighting culture you may have something to be concerned abou

It was big in Northeast LA until pretty recently. The big fed crackdown was mid to late '90s, I think? My opinion of pits is most definitely colored by the dozens and dozens of vicious monsters I've known. I'm aware that some are sweet natured but as others have said, breeding them should be illegal.

When the feds busted a big fight in West Carroll years ago, I remember the Monroe paper quoting one of the US Marshals about how insurance on a Corvette is higher than insurance on a Mercedes of similar value. Its not because the Corvette is more dangerous, its the guy who wants the Corvette that's more dangerous.

Loosely related story:

There's a bar outside Oak Grove called Sweet Pea's. They have a pretty nice area set up outside for horseshoe tournaments and people used to drive from all over for fairly high stakes on horseshoes. When the movie Gladiator came out they started chaining the most vicious pits they could find to either side of the throwing areas. The locals would know the dogs by name and have some familiarity with dog fighting culture so they took it in stride. The out of towners would get pretty disconcerted by snarling pits on either side throwing themselves against the chains in a murderous rage.

I think the appeal is I got a bad arse dog, ergo I am a badass. Like Hummers are seen as small penis compensators. Big vehicle:Big dude. Bad dog:bad dude.

Little late answering, but no we did not. My current dogs have not shown any aggression.

So a Pitt Bull and an American Staffordshire Terrier ARE the same breed???

Lots of kennels and rescues like to throw that name out there to sway people toward the dog? They look the same to me??

Pits are good dogs for the most part....kinda like people.

There are lovers and haters of the breed, but at the end of the day it's you that has to make up your own mind about the breed of dog you want in your house.

They are extremely good catch dogs for hog hunting. Other than that they're worthless IMO.

Why not a Doberman, Bullmastiff, Puli, German Shepherd or Rottweiler?

those dogs are bigger and more vicious than pits. weren't people in the 90s calling for deaths to these dogs too?

Don't bring those dogs up.
Let the idiots focus on the pitbull.

While I've known many German shepherds who are nice and well behaved 2 of the worst incidents involving other dogs were with German shepherds. So I'm always weary of them

1.walking my 6month yellow lab on a leash when a German Shepherd jumped a fence and proceeded to attack my dog and had it by the throat. I thought for sure I was going to have a dead dog on the end of my leash. Luckily the owner after repeatedly kicking his own dog got it to release its jaw.

2. I was around 10 when I entered the back yard and witnessed a massacre of a kitten, we had just gotten, from a Shephard from a few houses down.

German shepherds were bred for their prey drive. Not uncommo for an outside shepherd to attack any thing smaller than them. Especially a female.

We had one that was good with people, but would kill any dog she didnt know who came in the yard. Was always a stray male dog looking for pussy.

Yes and no. Petey was the foundation dog for AKC recognizing American Staffordshire Terriers...AKC bred strictly for confirmation to the size standard, temperment. They selectively bred dogs that were less 'game'.

American Pitbull Terriers were bred for that 'gameness', that tenacity... Those made the best fighters. Those were, however, rarely people aggressive. What handler would want to fight a pit that is prone to bite him when he stepped in?

Today you can find many examples of Amstaffs in the AKC to also be recognized by UDBA as American Pitbull Terriers. Akc doesn't recognize the UDBA dogs.

There is a lot of solid info on these dogs out there and if one looks instead of believing the media hype they would see a different animal. Ask your vet how many Pits have shown him aggression vs any other breed you choose. Vets know.

For people living in urban areas, they make sense because:

--they have a working dog lineage, so they tend to be intelligent. But unlike herding or hunting dogs, they don't require a lot of space. They were originally bred to handle bulls in corrals.

--they have short hair = good for indoors

--the ones I have been around tend not to bark a lot, so they are less apt to piss off the neighbors.
