I do agree that this is nice.

My Dad took us to sporting events at a very young age. He usually talked to us and explained everything/pointed out the fun mascots/etc. the whole time.

My kindergartner is reading on a 3rd grade level and doing 2nd grade math. He's also bi-lingual (English and Spanish) although neither I nor his mother speak Spanish to any degree (he translates for us and the Nanny daily). He plays both English games and Spanish games - both educational and non-educational based games. He watches videos in both Spanish and English. One great thing is he can send me text messages when I'm travelling out of the country -- it is very cool to get messages from a 6 year old that he sends completely on his own when I am overseas.

He also loves playing baseball and soccer. And makes his own nerf-war videos (we won't let him post to YouTube yet even though he continually asks to do so).

I agree there is a huge reliance of kids on iPads/tablets. But to assume everything on a tablet is mindless .99 games is really obtuse.

Games like minecraft are today's Legos. From a way to inspire a child's mind - there really is very little difference. They both allow the child to use their imagination to design and build. Personally, I prefer Legos, as does my kindergartner. But on long car rides, plane rides, and certain other social instances where a kid would be bored out of his skull, I am glad he has something to entertain and stimulate his mind.

Yet, when we go to Astros games, the last thing he wants is his iPad.

Tablets are a way of life now. They aren't evil. But I agree, they also should not be babysitters. There should be balance.

Yep. It is. Loud annoying creatures shut up with objects. Same shite.

;)

Seriously, don't be dense. I was not comparing the two in any other fashion.

Go a day without posting on TD. Go outside, read a book, etc....

Why are so many parents these days content with letting their kids become tablet zombies. It's like the tablet has become the role of a parent. No need to parent your kids, just hand them an iPad and let them become mindless tablet drones.

I was at a Mavs game and a family was there and all 3 of their kids were on their tablets the entire game. What is the point of even bringing them to the game if they are just going to stare at a tablet the entire time?

When I was a kid my parents didn't buy me video games. If I wanted to have fun I played outside. Yeah, that's what kids did back in my day. Play outside. Build bike jumps out of plywood, explore the forests and areas nearby, go fishing in the pond or creek, climb trees, make forts, play tackle football with no pads. It's a novel concept isn't it?

If I were not playing outside I was doing something useful like reading a book, or playing with toys that at least inspire thinking like LEGOs or hot wheel race tracks. Not mindless $0.99 tablet games that require no thought and pressing one button.

Boy this is taking it to the extreme. You must not be a parent.

And who said that an iPad is only good for mindless games? There are plenty of intellectually stimulating games that help children learn.

And for the record, I agree with what you're trying to say. It's just not an either/or situation.

You mean like the novel concept of playing video games AND playing outside?

If I had the spare time I would try to get some research funded to study the effects of tablets/phones as it relates to ADHD diagnosis in children under 5. There's some real legs to the theory that the over-stimulation and instant gratification that is ingrained in the brain that early causes permanent damage and habits that will last a lifetime. They're definitely a useful tool as far as education goes but using them like a pacifier is a perfect example. There's a reason why children should be weened off of it at a certain age. I'm glad my kids were raised just before the digital age took over.
