Why are so many parents these days content with letting their kids become tablet zombies. It's like the tablet has become the role of a parent. No need to parent your kids, just hand them an iPad and let them become mindless tablet drones.

I was at a Mavs game and a family was there and all 3 of their kids were on their tablets the entire game. What is the point of even bringing them to the game if they are just going to stare at a tablet the entire time?

When I was a kid my parents didn't buy me video games. If I wanted to have fun I played outside. Yeah, that's what kids did back in my day. Play outside. Build bike jumps out of plywood, explore the forests and areas nearby, go fishing in the pond or creek, climb trees, make forts, play tackle football with no pads. It's a novel concept isn't it?

If I were not playing outside I was doing something useful like reading a book, or playing with toys that at least inspire thinking like LEGOs or hot wheel race tracks. Not mindless $0.99 tablet games that require no thought and pressing one button.

As a parent of a toddler when you want them to sit still bring out the pad. It's a great tool that's easily abused because they're silent when they use it. Taking our first flight soon and the ipad will keep the other passengers from thinking we're complete assholes.

Because, that way, they can bitch about how much the public school system and Obama are failing their kids.

I understand and I have a daughter as well. We don't do the whole game thing and she barely watches tv period.

However, if I'm at a game, or plane, or any public affair and I have no choice or I want to bring my daughter than I have all kind of games and activities on my IPAD for the benefit of others. It's not making them a zombie, but easier for public events than her getting bored and fussy.

If we're taking a lot older than I agree with you.

So basically a pacifier. Problem is once they get older you parents will still use tablets as their pacifier. It will never end.

How shitty of a parent do you have to be if you have to rely on a tablet to get them to behave.

What did parents do in the age before tablets?

Here is what my dad did: He told me to be quiet, or it would be a spanking. That usually did the trick. Not handing me some electronic device.

Parents these days are pussies though, to afraid to spank their kids.

Yes it pacifies a energetic child so we don't bother the other 200 people that have to deal with a screaming child. I'd bet you would start a thread bitching about that kind of parenting too goldennugget. The good news is no woman will want to reproduce with a TCU reject.

Or you are a shitty parent who can't get your child to behave without an electronic device.

How did people do it before 2010 when the iPad came out?

I was the same, but I'd venture a guess if you had all that cool, badass technology "back in your day", you would have spent a little less time outside and a little more time playing with that technology.

I played plenty of video games that I'd say bettered me far more than playing with Hot Wheels. But that's just me.

Not a parent, so I could be completely off. But if my choices were to have my kid fidgeting, complaining, begging to go to concession stand, etc. vs. sit silently on the iPad while I enjoy whatever event we are at, I'm taking the latter.

Kinda like when my dog is annoying the shite out of me because she wants to go in and out/wants attention. I give her a chewie and she's occupied for the hour.

I'm sorry your father beat you before you turned two but most parents understand spanking a child that young doesn't do much good because they don't have the cognitive processes to understand cause and effect. Maybe your father shouldn't have hit you in the head as often so you could understand.

At an event or traveling? Color, read, then gameboy. Nothing new outside of the medium.

A toddler doesn't gaf about a nba game.

Coloring books, toys, etc.

You can be the biggest child beater in the world.. but you aren't going to stop a kid from being a kid sometimes. And some people probably don't want to have to stop their good time to spank their kid when they can just bring something to keep the kid from being bored out of their mind.

Being spanked and "listening to daddy" didn't help the tons of adults I see talking during church service/weddings and being rude in general life. So I really don't care what method someone uses.

I get exactly what the OP is saying. The problem is that it becomes routine to these kids and they become dumb to the world around them. I would rather talk to and teach my kids things instead of sticking an electronic device in their hands. I believe it makes them numb and dumb to the world around them.

What kills me too is when I drop the kids off at school and all the soccer moms have movies or cartoons playing on the flip down dvd player. Can your kids really not ride 10 minutes to school without watching tv? This is going to be a fricked up generation.

I love non-parents giving parenting advice on this board.

The ignorance just oozes from every subsequent post.

My 4 year old could care less about basketball, but my 7 year old will cheer and scream her head off. So I can either deny her the opportunity to attend, or I can keep him busy while he attends an event that is mostly for his sister. I could beat him, sure. Just continue to spank him as he cries and runs around from boredom b/c he's not provided any outlet, but that could get me arrested, and would make me a much shittier parent than allowing him to use a tablet while he's bored.

You should have tried school instead of running around all day long. Unfortunately, by the time mine get home from school, gymnastics/soccer, and the 7 yr old finishes homework, it's already dark. I guess I could send them out to fish, or climb, or play tackle football in the street at that point, but the wife probably wouldn't like it. I figure 1-2 hours of screen won't kill them at that point.

You obviously have not played any tablet or video games in a long damn time. Every single one of the books you read, and the board games you played, can be found on a tablet. And then there are programs like Starfall, ABC mouse, etc...
