WTF would I be doing with my phone, computer, tablet, that I am afraid for the FBI to look at?Nothing.
How do you know?
We have seen multiple times in the very country, law abiding citizens become enemies of the state.
McCarthyism, Nixon's enemies list, the current administration using the IRS to target political opponents.
While you may doing nothing wrong, whose to say your opinions won't one day constitute "thought crimes" and your cell phone will be the noose used to hang you.
These things have happened far too often through history, here and abroad, to think there is no possibility that they may one day come for you.

To me this is Apple saying yes it can be done, but now we're going to close that loophole. That is a different position that the one they've been pushing.
dude... you arent getting it. they never said they cant, they've said they wont. now they wont have to say they wont, because after this, they truly cant

On the contrary, I think you can make the argument that if Apple caves here then they could avoid that kind of legislation passing in the future. I'm not suggesting they should cave because of that, but failing to cooperate here would increase calls for that kind of legislation, don't you think?
I don't think it really matters if Apple wins or loses. State LEO will always say yes to more surveillance powers, and most state legislatures listen intently to their LEO lobby, especially post 9/11 New York.
It's bothersome to think that this is literally the same kind of phone system that the Stasi used, or that China has in place currently. If this passing doesn't throw up red flags everywhere, I don't know what will.

Bumping this thread since I had a chance to talk to a close friend in federal law enforcement stationed in DC who sat in on congressional hearings on this matter last week.
He flatly states that the FBI "doesn't expect to find anything useful" on the phone but that they figure this is the perfect case to push the matter with the courts. Solely because the terrorism boogeyman sways the public.
Really sad that what we all thought to be true is.
