Better than what other airlines offer.

You should see some of the major carriers. They just added a shite ton of new 737-8 and 737-7 models. Still have a few old 737-3s flying but they're retiring those at a cyclic rate.

Clientele gets trashier and trashier as it becomes the "hip" airline
Can't really argue that but I've seen trash on all the airlines I've flown.

Picking your own seat is a stupid gimmick
Depends. Pay the early bird fee and pick whatever you want.
I will say this; Spirit is by far the worst airline you can fly. If their mind numbing lack of customer service and fees don't drive you to an early death, their aircraft will. They're broken literally all the time. They're the butt of most jokes in the airline industry.

Not necessarily. Again...window seat I can see out the airplane. Places don't feel so enclosed when you can see out of them.

Obviously not in a SW market

Makes sense but you can't get up?

Outdated fleet? Delta still flies MD-88's built 20+ years ago.

So does American, Allegiant and Spirit. Delta and United still fly 747s from the early 90s while everyone else is flying 777s, 787s, and A330s on the same routes.

I would rather be able to see out the window than get up. If I sit on the aisle seat I'm focusing on how small the plane is.

And they are beautiful too. Love those planes.
I think Delta is slowly phasing them out in favor of the new Bombardier CS300 and the A320. I think United is buying a lot of 737s. Not sure what AA is doing.
Supposedly Southwest isn't going to be the 737-10 launch customer.

I feel as if only old people quantify the age of planes for some reason.

Interesting. so do you look out the window the whole time?

They are big for leisure travel in my home airport (PIT), but you are correct that their service level is inexcusably shitty in many markets and even nonexistent in many more.

In the aviation world, age doesn't really matter a whole lot. A lot of commercial airliners get refurbished once they're retired from the airlines and continue on for another 15+ years flying for cargo carriers. Hell, FedEx is still flying old arse MD-10s that were originally built in the 70s and 80s. It all boils down to the quality of the maintenance department.

Nope, reading relaxes me so I will read for most of the flight(or sleep)...but at least when I start feeling anxious...it's right there.
I will keep the window screen up though...maybe not all the way up if it's really bright outside and the person next to me is trying to sleep...but at least up enough for me to see out of.

Their service level is far superior to American or united or delta.
ETA: my condolences for you having to live in Pittsburgh

I only fly a few times per year, but Southwest seems to always have the best price, always has the most convenient flights, and I've never had any issues choosing whichever seats I want. And my carry-on always fits (whereas sometimes it hasn't on other airlines). Southwest has easily become my first choice.
Posted on 6/25/17 at 7:37 pm to Devil_doge
What does that mean? Quality of maintenance department?
Posted on 6/25/17 at 7:37 pm to dsides
I only fly Southwest, but they do not have free wi-fi. It'a 8 bucks a day.

What airline is gonna start charging for overhead bin space?
