To be honest, coming from a former teacher whose students had take-home Macbooks, you probably are in the minority. That doesn't make it right or wrong though.

Are you afraid she'll be on the internet all night? There are ways to monitor that without her knowing. You could give her the laptop with rules about what time to shut it down each night, and you'll know when she violates that rule. I agree that trust has to be earned, but you also have to give opportunities to earn it.

Facebook already rots the brains of older people, may as well get a head start with your kid

My kids have computers and phones in their rooms. But, I can't believe the feds haven't made inappropriate websites have an .xxx vs .com. It would be so much easier to regulate/restrict.

Same. I didn't realize parents did this until I started reading td.

Eta: and if you're going to do that, you have to tell them beforehand.

Just spy on her. Use the stolen info as counter-intelligence to slowly manipulate her into a life of obedience via extortion.

When she finally gets to keep it in her room, she will live web cam sex shows on the internet just to rebel against you for being an over oppressive douche of a parent.

I gave no reason for my parents not to trust me. But still had rules (cell phone, car privileges, curfew, etc.)

Hope she isn't trying to line up a rendezvous with the BBC.

There are rules and there are excessive controls. Cerfew, car, cell phone. Things that when abused can be taken away... this kid doesn't even get a phone in her room.

we are the only parents that ask her to bring it downstairs before bed every night. We don't allow them to keep their cell phones in their rooms at night

congrats! The first week she's off to college on her own, she'll have blown at least 3 dudes, gotten drunk a minimum of 4 times, tried weed for the first time (possibly coke, depending on college), and probably a tattoo as well.
