So this will kill people like synthetic pot, as opposed to the real thing that will not? Great

I found this comment at the bottom of the article.

quote:

in Germany, many town health boards employ a mushroom expert who determines edibility/safety-usually on Monday morning. This is when the weekender mushroom gatherers come in to Town Hall to get the OK for their harvest. I wish we had the same here in the U.S.

Those Germans sure have some ideas that we could copy.

The euphoria and hallucinations induced from eating Psilocybe “magic mushrooms” have earned the fungi a cult following. Sandoz chemist Albert Hofmann isolated and determined the structure of psilocybin, the main ingredient in mushrooms that leads to the psychedelic effects, nearly 60 years ago. That discovery and subsequent mind-altering experiments by Harvard University psychologist Timothy F. Leary have left scientists longing to develop a large-scale synthesis of the compound for medical uses, which include treating anxiety and depression in terminal cancer patients and treating nicotine addiction. Yet no one has been able to unravel the enzymatic pathway the mushrooms use to make psilocybin, until now.

I'm fairly certain most of this is in accurate, as Hoffman was working with ergot mold in attempt to find a cure for migraines. What he stumbled across was actually LSD and the Sandoz company from Switzerland was the first to commercially produce LSD.

The article is correct regarding Hoffman and psilocybin.

Yes, Hoffman is better known for his problem child, LSD.

Here is an interesting link regarding Hoffman and the psilocybin.....

I ran the table off the break at Ms Mae's around 3:00 a.m. during Mardi Gras one year. We were tripping pretty hard. The sense of wonderment and joy in my friends eyes when I made the last ball was something to behold.

Hoffman's job at Sandoz was to identify and isolate active compounds from organic sources in order to create and market exact-dosage drugs that would be superior to the medicine nature gives us. LSD wasn't the only thing he worked on; later years he focused on psychedelics including psilocybin.

Jokes aside, this has the potental to relieve a lot of suffering. Microdoses of psychedelics have shown promise in relieving treatment resistant depredsion.

Such incredible success with synthetic marijuana I'm sure this will be incredibly safe.

"Synthetic marijuana" is not actually synthetic marijuana. It's synthetic cannabinoids that are purposely not the same as those found in marijuana so that they can skirt around drug laws. This is not remotely the same situation.

There are tons of synthetic psychedelics out there that are perfectly safe. The godfather of MDMA, Alexander Shulgin, had a DEA license to manufacture compounds in the 80s and spent his time synthesizing them, documenting them, and tripping on them, all safely, before the DEA took his license away. In the underground drug trade these other compounds aren't common, but they are available, and experienced trippers seek them out to try different types of trips. Other people have followed in his footsteps and created some safe, and legal (but not for long), derivatives.

So no, this isn't remotely the same as the "synthetic marijuana" situation

So, does this mean I might be able to get a prescription for shrooms soon? What exactly is going to be the benefit of this?
