all of this is great in theory.....but more and more self-check outs are popping up and the prices of goods keep rising.

Inflation is the primary driver of costs rising. Your above quoted statement is the first sign that you crowdsource your knowledge of economics.

quote:

Your Economics 101 lesson doesn't take into consideration corporate greed. Just because they're saving labor costs doesn't automatically mean it's passed onto the customer.

This is the 2nd sign. You may not see it, but it is absolutely passed along to the customer. It is unavoidable. Corporations take it all into account when determining product pricing.

I’m also noticing your focus on what you termed “corporate greed”

We hear it thrown around as if greed should be compartmentalized. The pursuit of self interest is part of the human condition and is accounted for in every economic transaction. Any consensual transaction requires that 2 people feel they are getting the better deal. Even the consumer must believe the value of the product they receive is worth more than the value of money they surrender for it. Is that greed?

When homeless people pester passers-by for handouts, is that greed?

When low income people discover they qualify for “free” services at taxpayer expense and sign up to receive something that they did nothing to earn at the expense of people who actually earned money that was taken from them, is that greed? Which side is more greedy? Only one party of this transaction consents, so is that a telling indicator of who is more greedy?

Or is it only greed when corporations attempt to grow their value?

Your choice to compartmentalize greed shows your thinking skills have been corrupted by shallow activist beliefs who do not understand the efficiency of how a less authoritarian market works.

Freedom means free choice. So under this thread topic, customers should be free to choose which method best serves their interest.

Discount is not the driver of choice here. It’s benefit.

Our technological advances are going to ruin us. Yeah, get off my lawn, but you watch.

No. You’ve got it wrong.

What is ruining us is that politicians made it illegal to let two people negotiate a wage rate that works for both.

We could have endless jobs for people whose skills aren’t worth a fixed wage rate that we keep raising. But we made that freedom illegal.

We’re currently ok with letting people learn lessons of the workplace appropriate for the value they bring to an organization as long as we call it an internship. But we made it illegal to pay any wage rate that is incrementally higher that these workers may consent to, because moronic activists think every job must pay a living wage. We’re skipping a step. First they must demonstrate their labor produces the value of a given wage rate.

Anyone not worth the wage rate is called unemployed.

I always look at it as an opportunity to get 5 avocados for the price of 4 and ring up the cheapest sku of similarly weighted skus. Generally save about 10 to 30% off my order depending on circumstances.

If I'm just grabbing a few things I prefer self checkout.

2 or 3 items, will use. Otherwise, will use the personal touch. United has terrific customer service. Others, not so much.

Self checkout doesn’t automate anything…
Its not hard to understand. You’re doing the same job as a cashier. Only you’re doing it for free.

People struggle to let go of things. It is a gradual thing for people to accept that we need to move human labor from menial jobs to something more skilled and productive.

I like the self-checkouts at Circle K. You just place your items on the checkout and it rings them all up at once - no scanning. Then I pay and I'm out. Faster than the line they usually have.

It takes more time at self checkout for me. Every damn item fails to get weighed by the machine, and then the machine tells me that I have to bag it even though it is already in the bag. Forget that.
Then you just suck at it.

I use Scan and Go at Sam's, amazes me to see long lines at the check out and self check out when customers have that option.

I’m not sure I would go to Sam’s without this convenience. I tell people about it all the time, particularly if they bitch about Sam’s being crowded or overwhelming and am usually met with a stupid response dismissing the idea.

Same with the Chick-fil-A app. Order it down the road, park and go in when it notifies you. People are like no I’d rather sit in line and talk to the child holding a tablet with the app installed on it.

I prefer them to going to a person. I just don't like Walmarts system.

That Japanese department store (name escapes me ) that's all over the east coast has the best self check out. It uses RFID and scans your entire basket at once.
Was really neat.

The only place I don’t use self checkout is Costco. The self checkout is too small if you have more than 3 or 4 items. Add to that the bigger items won’t scan and you have to wait on someone to come over and help, it just isn’t worth it.

Costco needs to get with the times and have it set up like Sam’s does so you can scan as you go.

I could never do this if I was buying any kind of dairy, produce or meat tbh. At Trader Joe's you'd get things that are a full 5 to 7 days older and closer to expiration
