You can self check out at the Piggly Wiggly but you miss all the good gossip.

Was stuck behind an old lady in self-checkout that didn't know how to scan her items and she had a basket full. The next in line had to do it for her so we could eventually get out of there. I say old lady but she was in her early 70s. She should know how to scan. She should also refuse to use self-checkout from now on.

I go 5x faster than a cashier.
I’ll gladly use self checkout every single time.

How is it benefitting the customer? You don't pay a cheaper price for using it and they aren't paying you to do the work.

Not having to interact with someone is a quality of its own. There are a lot of stupid people around. Having to deal with one less is worth it…..

Solid point. The cashier not having to deal with you very likely improved their quality of life.

The ones that require you to do this are the worst. I won't shop at places with this restriction in their self checkout line.

About 20-25 years ago I stopped going to gas stations that didnt have ‘pay at the pump.

I’m about 6-12 months away from stopping
going to groceries that don’t offer self-checkout. It’s what I prefer. I hate dealing with a cashier.

Its pathetic in 2023 that there are STILL some groceries that dont offer self checkout.

If I’m not buying a bunch of produce that has to be weighed or 50 items I use them all the time.

I use it if I ever find myself in Walmart
I use it half the time at Home Depot
Same with Winn Dixie

I don’t think I’ve ever used it at Publix. That’s where shopping is a pleasure, and the awesome folks at the checkout are a part of that

One of my faves was an LSU fan named Mike. I obviously called him “Mike the Tiger”. Loved talking SEC sports with him. He passed unexpectedly a few years ago. Was a real bummer. All the people at my Publix love me. I’ve also fricked 2 great Publix girls (not MY Publix. That would be tacky) I picked up in the checkout.

Off topic, but I also fricked the deli manager at my work Publix, and a Bakery manager at another. That’s right…..MANAGERS

Do you get paid to pump your own gas?

No, but full service gas stations have essentially been eliminated in most of the country.

Do you deposit checks using the app on your phone?

Saves me time on a trip to the bank. Bad comparison.

Have you noticed people pulling grocery orders for pickup and/or delivery? Job Created because of technology.

Quite likely people who would otherwise be working the checkout counter so net zero at best.

Plus, using your example of pumping gas and depositing checks, those are jobs lost due to technology. What are the people who rely on low paying jobs supposed to do when their job is eliminated because of automation or because companies realize they can pass the responsibility on to the customer.

I was a network administrator and later a computer programmer, and I hate self-checkout.

Still amazes me people are too stupid to understand something this simple.

I prefer the self checkouts, but if you have produce sold by the pound, it can be a problem, those little stickers on the produce work, sometimes.

I go through self checkout when I have a small number of items. People that bring baskets full of shite through self checkout are the bane of my existence. You are NOT faster than a normal line.

My Kroger recently put in what is essentially a Hybrid self checkout.

There are three of them if I’m not mistaken. And they have the full conveyor belt but the scanner is up in the front. At the three lanes there is always one worker. As you scan things and place on conveyor they bag for you. And will help with you anything you need system wise.

The worker just hops between the three aisles the entire time. I’ve noticed people are more willing to go to those (myself) included when we have larger number of items compared to normal self checkout.

Bring your own bags. No more bags, plastic or paper.

Go green MOFO.

Good not to poop in your own pond, solid advice.

I am older so Piggly Wiggly cashiers are more my speed these days. They also have their own smokes which is a plus.

The other thing is....self-checkouts at grocery stories have nothing to do with "jobs lost because of technology".

There's not one new piece of tech involved. It's quite literally the same exact tech just turned towards you instead of another person. It's purely jobs lost for the sake of cutting back on labor cost.

Don't forget to double-bag.
