Also freedom of speech does not mean you're free from consequences.

University president probably expelled the kid to prevent rioting, protests and probable harm to the kids involved. Business decision unfortunately.

you were claiming that free speech protected the fraternity against university discipline?
false.

I said that whenever a University restricts speech it is a slippery slope and a dangerous road.

You're sticking to the premise OU has no authority to remove the students.

Yes?

Don't crawfish now little buddy. You have your racist double standard and that's fine.

I really DGAF what happens to these kids. I'm just sure they are worthless as human beings.

It was out of retaliation from Mixon being called some homosexual slur. I wonder if that was a factor in this being a suspension.

I am not familiar with the story but I SERIOUSLY doubt that they took a light sentence on him because someone used a homosexual slur before he broke this girls face. If he got a light sentence it is because of football and that is all.

I would say OU has a very interesting lawsuit if they are foolish enough to follow through with expelling them.

Expulsion is over the top to you? Seems pretty logical to me and likely doing the kids some short term favors.

Yea, well it seems a bit unfair to the two students considering there was a bus load of other people likely chanting along with them.

I never have liked the stand point of picking a couple of people and making an example of them.

While I don't condone their actions, I tend to agree that free speech at a private function being regulated by a public institution will not end well. Not to mention some of these pricks are likely well connected enough to stir things up.

These kids' families won't want to have to hire a lawyer to defend the racist chants. The quickest way for this to go away is for these idiots to find another university to attend.

So I only read the first 4 or so pages and I'm sure the discussion has remained just as intelligent for the next 14 pages.

But anyway, my question here is how they decided to kick out these two kids when there were probably 40 other people on the bus doing the same thing

Expelled from the University? Maybe a bit too harsh of a penalty. But this wouldn't be the 1st person expelled over something posted on social media [Ex. LSU Pizza Girl].

Who knows, the University could be doing them a favor.

Having authority to do something and acting on that authority without violating one's rights are two separate the things.

Wasn't slavery abolished a pretty long time ago? I'm pretty sure it was. I'll google it.

They were specifically booted for their "leadership role" in the chant.

Mixon entered an Alford Plea, which allows him to maintain his innocence while acknowledging that enough evidence exists for a jury to find him guilty.

Mixon was given a one-year deferred sentence, 100 hours of community service and cognitive behavior counseling.

A deferred sentence means Mixon will not have a criminal conviction for the misdemeanor offense if he completes probation successfully. Also, eventually, the charge itself could be expunged from public court records.

It's because of being a football player.

I only remember one "leader"

I mean I'd have to imagine anyone who showed their face in that video would transfer but I guess OU made that decision for them

So basically, you were the only two identified on camera chanting. We [The University] need to set a precedent on this matter and attempt to move on.

Honestly I don't know. Outside of all of the other legal arguments though your question is a more likely stance for the family to take, eg, if mine goes then they all should go. Forget some first amendment fight, the fight will be fairness in that regard. Sadly, that too will further ostracize the kids and likely lynched from that proverbial tree by their own peers.
