Any tips for getting ready for it? Its April 2nd.

I am in the Army but running isnt my thing. Without any training I can do an 8 minute mile pace and hold it for two miles (Army Physical Fitness Test).

The longest I ever really ran was a 4k, any tips to get ready? I have trouble running regularly because between work and school I have 20 hour days 2 to 3 times a week. Thanks!

If you'll just go ahead and wear the ribbon, you'll save yourself a lot of trouble.

I went out drinking and eating fried food the night before. Think I was around the 28 mark.

Let me be the first to say good for you. Everyone on the OT can do a sub 2hr marathon, so these threads always are filled with a bunch of mockery and grand statements. How dare anyone decide to do something healthy.

If you can do 2 miles, 3.1 isn't going to kill you. I'd just up your mileage immediately. Shouldn't have to worry about anything.

Is a 5k better than a 401k?

They want me to decide at work and I just don't know.

Not trying to be a jackass...I'm genuinely curious.

You're in the Army and you've never run 3 or more miles for PT?

8 minute miles aren't breaking recirds, but it's probably better than average in a 5k. Push yourself for a month and you'll have no problem. Worst case you can drop your pace by 30 seconds and that should leave enough in the tank to finish that extra mile. It should only take someone in decent shape about two weeks to go from couch to completing (albeit slowly) a 5k. You already seem to have a jump on it. So push yourself for 3 weeks, cut back the week before, and you'll finish with an okay time easily.

Slow your roll from that 8 minute pace so that you can go the extra 1.1 Have fun and good luck!

As many have said, if you're able to run 2 miles at an 8 minute pace, you should be fine going one more mile. If you have to, slow down a bit. Unless you're trying to win the thing or get a PR, it's all about having fun with it.

You are in the Army and have never run more than three miles?

Where are you stationed? I find this hard to believe.

Are you this concerned about going 1 extra mile? You're going to be doing far better than probably 70% of the people out there. Go run your 3 miles collect your shirt and be done with it.

You've never run three miles? We do Friday pub runs that are about 5 miles.

If you can't get off the couch and do a 5k right now, you either have injury issues or just a fat arse. 5k's are easy to finish.

Don't worry so much about the actual race part, just make sure you get that "3.1" sticker for your car so you can show everyone on the roads how fit you are.

what do you mean "do" a 5k? Anybody who is physically capable of walking can "do" a 5k.

But I always laugh when the hardasses say "if you can't finish a 5K in [x amount of time] then you're a pathetic loser!!!!!"

If I were you, I wouldn't go around telling people you are/were in the army and generally concerned about running 3 miles.

My advice: Don't start too fast, you will blow up about a mile in. Run regularly as much as you can. Like the others have said though, if you can do 2 miles, the extra 1.1 shouldn't be too bad

Uh, if you're running 8 minute miles there's no need to train for a 5K unless you want to get a certain time.

If that's true then buy a good watch, good shoes and train at your desired pace a few times a week. It's pretty simple really.

For longer races there are training schedules galore you can use.
