Just the inclusion of joint, multinational, and host nation forces, other governmental organizations like the state department, and nongovernmental organizations like the red cross, WHO, USAID etc, make it less of purely military operation than before. Nation building and all that....

Agreed. I have deployed multiple times to OIF and OEF. I have never been on a ship. I was a part of the initial invasion of Iraq in 2003 and We flew our entire Unit's equipment and troops via C5....

JTAC's are airforce and generally control Fixed wing aircraft. Apache's and/or Kiowa's (AWT and SWT) can be controlled by any competent Army personnel. just need a little AGI (Air/Ground Integration) training....
