The first couple miles are always tough. I don't worry about that in my daily maintenance runs. If you run races...10ks...hakfs...etc...then run a mile before to warm up.

I think if you run with proper form, good shoes, and have the muscle build up to do it, 10 miles probably doesn't hurt those guys all that much. There are a lot of people out there doing that mileage. You'd be surprised.

my problem is- i start off feeling like shite and barely any energy and dead legs, however i feel like i dont want to stop at the end. my best stretch is always the last 2-3 miles when i do a 7-10 mile run.

This is pretty typical for me. I hate my 4 mile runs because I feel like crap most of the run. I seem to hit the zone around 5 or 6 and keep feeling good into the teens. 20+ milers (won't get back to that kind of running until early summer) still suck at the end lol

moderate level- 40-50 miles per week

Hey everyone I'm a novice weightlifter and want some pointers to help break the plateu. I can typically rep 480 about 17 times but I just can't quite get to 20. Any help for a newbie?

Sorry, I can not relate.

First 3 miles I day dream. I forget I'm running and I do not realize how far I have gone. Mile 4-5 I start to get tired and look forward to the run being over. Mile 6 I get my runner's high. I feel like I can run forever. After 3-5 minutes my high is over and I'm back to feeling tired. Miles 7 and 8 I'm still tired and I stop at mile 8. I rarely run longer but occasionally will do a 12 mile run which is my tops.

i posted one time on a runners message board, and these guys made fun of me for being such a lightweight. advanced/high level is more like 10+ miles a day.

Who has that kind of time?

Also, elitist attitudes are pretty much guaranteed on themed message boards.

You ever go in the slowtwitch forums? There are people with full time jobs doing 12-20 hours per week training. I enjoy training, but if I get tired of it, I take the day off. At most I'll do an hour in the morning and an hour before bed. And that's only on rare occasion. There are people who will run to work, run at lunch, and then run home. Crazy.

and my last mile was a minute faster than mile 1.

This is the most impressive comment in the OP.
Unless your last mile had a big down hill, it's rare that this is done. Almost all, probably 95%, runners get slower as the race nears end.
What was your time?

First part of the run: frick this. I hate this.
Middle part of the run: This ain't so bad. This is pretty enjoyable.
Last part of the run: frick this. I hate this.

Overall distance has no bearing on this line of thought. It could be one mile or it could be a marathon.

Thanks for saying this. I thought eventually it would get easy and enjoyable.

You need to warm up. You're starting out cold so you wont hit your rhythm until mile 2 or 3. I don't warm up either.

I do a little leg stretching, then take off. It takes a 1/2 mile before I start to feel comfortable. But I'm only up to 1.5, working to up it to 3 miles three times a week. Couldn't fathom 30-40 week. I'd like to do a 1/2 or whole marathon before I kick.

I guess its because it's their "addiction". Drunks drink, potheads smoke, religious people pray, exercise people workout. I have no problem with any of them, unless they try to tell everyone that'll listen about it. Then their real addiction is bragging.

Been at it since 1976 (72 now) do 7 miles a day 6 days a week (9 min pace) - use to do 10 a day 6 days a week (8:30 pace) - however, since passing 65 yrs old and retiring - every once in a while I get runners knee - 7 a day fits in fine with the knees - work with weights before running in morning - 80 lbs - for about 15 minutes - drink coffee and water prior to running - breakfast after - feel great before and after -

I think it just depends. Some mornings my legs are dead bc of the weights and after a mile or 2 they loosen up. Some mornings I can jump right into a sub 8 minute pace.

40-50 miles is a good bit. I've run a few marathons and rarely went over 40 in my training.

I do have some running buddies that do 50-100 miles races. That shite is crazy!
