If you can't work it out with the roommate, go to landlord and ask to have the lease cancelled and enact a new one in only your name.

Do what Sid says. Tell landlord you will be responsible for total if he puts the lease in your name. If not tell you you just can't afford it and move on. It's not really a credit deal breaker these days. Then make the guy leave. I'd be willing to bet the landlord will make this accommodation for you.

This seems like a viable option.

And I find it difficult to believe that the OP didn't notice some red flags about the roommate's character prior to him stiffing him on rent. He obviously never gave a crap about you, how could you not notice this until now? Not a great judge of character IMO.

Does the RM drink, smoke pot, take ecstasy or anything of this nature? Does he have a GF or any female friends that he entertains from time to time? If he has GF does she stay the night, take showers?
If you answer yes to any of the above questions you need to grow a pair & tell him to GTFO. He will milk you as long as u let him do it.
Is he at least looking for a job or is he just sitting on his arse all day watching the cable u are paying for?
This is a real question btw, what is your age group? The reason I ask is some parents still have their grown children on the tit, maybe you can call his parents & recoup your money & maybe if they know the situation they will help their son out. U are seriously in worst case scenario with a roommate, Life lesson my friend.

This is liberal poetic justice.
At least you know him. I pay for people I don't know because of assholes that vote like you. However, I have no recourse...

Quit being a bitch and confront the man. That's part of what's wrong with society... No one can resolve problems outside a court room.

Dude be a man.

My Roommate (I own the house he just lives there till he finds a new job in NC) didnt pay rent once. I brought it up in casual conversation and he acted like he completely forgot and was so embarrassed in front of our friends that he left went to the bank and paid me in cash in front of all of our friends. Ever since then he has paid in cash and just left it laying on the counter around the 29th of each month
