I'm a big fan of uber, but I completely disagree with your statement. I get hit with surge pricing every other week on average. It has happened in three different cities just this summer.

But let's not pretend those people know where the heck they're going. If you don't have an address or know exactly where to direct them, you're better off cabbing it.

have to disagree with you there bud....
was in houston for the game took an uber suburban and had no issues... took a cab and I had to show the guy the map on my phone, he didn't have a clue...

There had to be some sort of compromise for crying cabbies like tiger wise, not Uber's fault

Those are tears of joy. I'm joining the darkside if I can charge $100 to go from UPT to FQ I'm in.

surge pricing is a TEMPORARY thing that happens SOMETIMES in order to increase supply to meet demand.

I get it brah. I was just frankly stunned to see 10x surging this weekend. Also, stunned a LaQuinta would charge $1,500 a night in New Orleans

I think there is a fine line between economics and ethics, and I consider that aforementioned behavior unethical.

No doubt those UberX riders made close to a grand working 3 hours Saturday night in Houston.

it's getting a little outta control huh

at first, I had to argue with the idiots who didn't know the benefits of Uber…now that it's 99% accepted that Uber is the bomb, I gotta argue it's ridiculous to charge $70 minimum fare for a 2 mile ride back to your hotel room

Didn't read the thread, but I took [2] UberX rides and [1] Lyft in Houston, and the total for ALL of them was $0.

$0 for my first Uber ride.
$0 for my 2nd because Jones used my user code when he was in BR and it gave me credits.
$0 for Lyft because my 2nd Uber driver was a Lyft driver as well and gave me a promo code.

ETA: I was really confused by tipping though, and it made me feel guilty. Someone on this website told me you still need to tip with UberX, but my driver kept saying no.. and I was confused. Should I have cash on me when I do UberX?

Several times after an event.
Several times to go out on a Friday/Saturday night.
Several times trying to get home late night.
Once mid morning on weekday.

All in downtown or highly populated areas. Houston, Chicago, Dallas... I do use a lot however

I was wondering about that. Are you sure ? The middle man's cut isn't any greater ? Let's do a thought experiment for the stupid cabbie: Fare1: 10 dollars, 50% to driver, 50% to Uber. Total: Uber: 5 dollars Driver 5 dollars fare 2 - same ride, SURGE pricing: 50 dollars, SAME SPLIT! Now tell me cabbie, does the driver make more money for that same ride? or does the evil middle man take all the money?

No, drivers get 80% cut no matter what

You can set the tip rate on the uber website.

Appears to be automatic after that so up to you really.

But I don't think you HAVE to tip nor is it expected. Like it should be really

It says that's only for UberTaxi, not UberX.

No, but I'm pretty psycho about tipping, so if it's allowed, I want to. I guess I should just try to have cash.

It's tough because I never carry 1's/5's and since they don't really do tipping, you can't get the driver to break it like you do in a cab.

Supposed to happen very quickly. They say they'll be up and running in a few days.
