Is it a state or parish road/bridge? Why wouldn't maintenance fall under our already paid tax dollars. This is eerily similar to the GNO. Bridge had been paid off for years and there was no telling where that money was going. When they claimed they would have to shut down the ferry and lay off a bunch of officers it got heated but here we are now with LSP patrolling (as they should) and funding for lights and maintenance coming from local tax dollars. (As it should)

Less than 20% was going to bridge repairs and bridge police.
They were taking in $1.7 million a month in tolls, despite missing out on another 200K because of toll tags that weren't billing property.

I would love to see:
1) when was the bridge "paid off"
2) how much money has been collected in tolls since then
3) how much do they spend per year on maintenance and overhead in detail
4) how much was collected in tolls each of the past 3 years

The should go ahead and start putting the extra lanes in for $2B. It will only get more expensive from here on out.

Toll revenue will provide about 73 percent of the Causeway's total revenue of $21,751,000, according to the budget. Other revenue includes $5,800,000, or 27 percent of the total, from state Highway Fund No. 2.

Under the expenditure column, the budget calls for $3,769,565 in spending on capital improvements/bridge rehabilitation, a 13 percent decrease. It calls for spending of $523,313 on capital acquisitions, an increase of about 104 percent that Dufrechou attributed to the upcoming purchases of as many as nine new police vehicles, a wrecker and a Motorist Assistance Patrol truck.
The largest expenses are payroll and benefits at $6,180,760 or 28 percent of the budget, and debt service, which is $4,637,891 or 21 percent of the budget.

From a capacity stand point I really don't see what an extra lane will do for them. Unless there is fog or an accident, I've never personally been in any traffic on that bridge. But I've never had to commute it daily, so my opinion may not be worth much. Now if they wanted to add shoulders, I think that would be a much better alternative.

Probably not. The way La politics work they probably refinanced the bridge a few times to pay for whiskey and fat strippers.

I don't think the article provided an exhaustive list of all expenses, would be curious to see how the remaining $6.6MM is spent.
