Wow. That is a very legitimate question by a child. Teacher could have used that as a teaching moment for all kids with an answer such as "The word Negro used to be used a long time ago to describe people who blah blah blah. We don't really use that word anymore. Instead the proper word to use is African American"

Since African-American is really a misnomer. Since Africa is a continent and has people of every race.

That could have been handled better. Really the teacher could have made a lesson out of it and promoted understanding.

I haven't said that word in years, and I haven't heard it in probably as long. My son will most definitely have to hear it in school or on the playground. I teach World Geography and Civics. Several years ago while studying the continent of Africa, I had a white female student pronounce "Nigeria" as if it had 2 g's. It was hilarious and the mixed culture classroom all laughed.
This was pre-Obama...I don't think we'd get the same reaction today.

Let it go, your son got the answer. PC is why he can't say "negro" when referring to a black person.
In the 80's my school friends of color HATED to be called African or negro. My friends of color now days I have never heard them use the PC term "African-American".

No more than "people of color" (since anywhere on the spectrum from swarthy to tan to pink to albino is a "color" apparently).
But they are the common parlance. Just as negro was (and still is in some places) common parlance back then.
