If the point is to point how how PC terms seem to change with the tide, (UNCF, the negro league, etc.) I think it's valid.

Well if I may be the one to help you to hone your "point grasping" skills, the connotation of "negro" hasn't changed in 40 years among people with a lick of common sense.

You'll never survive in the new world with that attitude.

Potentially offending someone has replaced murder as the second most heinous thing one can do (crimes against lions are still at the top... for now)

I called one of my buddies my "neBRO" during a back and forth bro-off one time. Cracked our shite up.

Maybe I should dial it back. I don't remember any subjects coming up that just left my mouth agape when I was nine years old.

Not sure what this means, but the word in question is almost never used in modern day, even by racists. The kid is in a school and is asking a question about a word that is important to American history. He may very well not know the distinction, and it's pretty silly to look at that as a slight on his dad.

Leaving this one alone.

I am envious of your inability to be racist.

Sounds like your son was being the classroom smartass.

Yep. Teaching and schools may be going to shite but I have no doubt that teachers still know when somebody is being a smartass when they see it.

And, of course, being pulled into the hall and told "Don't do that" is now being spun as "got in trouble" and the rotors of the helicopter parent have now been set in motion and the principal is going to have to listen to an hour long dissertation on how yet another special little snowflake has been wronged by the system.

I had a black female teacher back in high school that called all us white kids, nothing but a bunch of white devils. Was years and years ago and will never forget it. Of course never got in trouble for it.

Things said in comity among friends and peers and colleagues in jest have nothing to do with this. I can tell a good joke with best of them.

Other than it being phased out of being PC, what's the difference between Negro and Black?

If you cite era of use, why is People of Color acceptable again?

Can you see how it can be confusing?

I agree, but. Most of this board doesn't.

You already lost the argument because of your skin color. That's not racist though somehow.

Maybe in some hill in Appalachia or some other isolated community, but most people who use it know what they're doing. And I don't fault the child. But I do fault the father. That's life. He's probably around my age or older. Again, I was in elementary school from 1987-1993. It wasn't so "giggle giggle oh what does this mean" term then.
