I think the term "flu like symptoms" that sportscasters used to use, was created because of Mantle and Ford

Hate to tell ya, but most Americans have NEVER knowingly played a Garth Brooks tune. (and I like most country music - but most people don't)

While I agree that many Americans have never knowingly played a Garth Brooks tune, that doesn't mean they don't recognize the name. I can only name three songs of his, but I recognize he's the biggest-selling country music act of all time. Country music isn't popular with everyone, but I think it would be uncommon to find someone that is completely unaware of country music and couldn't recognize the name Garth Brooks.

And while I agree that Mickey Mantle was on almost everyone's TV sets and radios in the 50's and 60's at arguable the height of the sport's popularity, I wonder both how many young people and how many women can recognize Mickey Mantle. Not necessarily identify him in a photograph or in a video clip, but rather know who Mantle is if his name is mentioned in conversation. I think my mom might be able to recognize the name Mickey Mantle, but that's because my dad was a huge Yankees fan. I really don't think she would be aware of Mantle without my dad.

I find the older generation praises athletes from their time who were hard partiers. It is used as a positive description

However, if a modern athlete gets caught at a bar or partying, they are thug pieces of shite who take things for granted for not being laser focused at all time

really kind of meant it as just pointing out the constant 24/7 self-imposed abuse on his body and still performed on the field at the level he did

I get it. Im just talking in general

It seems to be used as a "that dude was the man. He was always hammered yadad yada"

But they freak the frick out when a current guy gets photographed in a bar

This was post-WW2 America. Drinking was part of the culture. Dudes had stuff to forget. About 16 million of them.

Just a different era.

I see more outrage, and probably some justification, when a player or group of players go on a trip on days off before a big(playoff usually) game, like Romo and Witten going to Cabo before a playoff game, Johnny Doucheball going to Vegas the night before a home game that he was supposed to start, things like that, or Pac Man shooting up a strip club in Vegas

Was offered a scholarship at OU as a halfback. There are few individuals in any profession that garner universal respect and reverence, Mantle is one of them.

Not sure of the truth of this story, but it's pretty cool if it is and LSU related.
Buddy Soefker played at LSU in the early 60's and was the top player coming out of TN, maybe the top rated rb in high school. He was choosing between Oklahoma and LSU, ultimately chose LSU. Years later he was in a restaurant and introduced to Mickey Mantle. Mantle says he has always wanted to meet Buddy Soefker because if it weren't for him he never would have become Mickey Mantle we all know. He said he was all set to go to OU until he heard Buddy Soefker was going and that scared him off into going the baseball route

Mickey Mantle by far. He is a fabric of Americana. I bet over 90% of the american population has heard of Mantle and knew he played baseball.

This just isn't correct in 2019 America.

The real question is when did the answer switch from Mickey Mantle to Garth Brooks?

I think most are answering the question by pointing out how little they know of Brooks v. Mantle as a comparison
