The Mick died 24 years ago and his playing career ended more than 50 years ago yet he is still talked about and is in this debate. There is no question that Mickey, during the height of his career, was much more famous than Garth, at the height of his. Will anyone even talk about Garth 50 years after his last concert?

Need to add Vince Gill to the list of famous Oklahomans. Definitely has a better voice than Garth and is infinitely better on the guitar.

I hate to say it, but most of Garth Brooks songs don't hold up.
That is like the opposite thing about Garth songs

His tour is filled with the old songs and they hold up unbelievably well and are still song in unison all over the country

Much too Young
Friends in Low Places
The dance
etc etc

When did it become the hipster OT thing to hate on Garth?

Will people talk about the person #2 in record sales?

I mean the #1 group the Beatles are still talked about.....

Brooks held a concert that had 980,000 people attend....

He also had the #2 most attended tour in history

AND I think he was 42 years old when he died. That means if he was still living he'd be...uh... Well, I don't have a calculator with me but he would be old.

agree, I think Garth got so big because of timing more so than talent, he came along when "country" was beginning to morph into pop music and gained a lot of crossover exposure, and to his credit, he took the ball and ran with it

Eh, you are selling him short

His success is a couple of things IMHO

1. Talent. He def has a shite ton

2. He surrounded himself with fantastic songwriters

3. He doesnt half arse it. That dude puts in a shite ton of energy and truly cares about the fans. He plays multiple shows in every city he goes to in order to keep people from making money on second hand ticket sales

At the height of popularity...

When Mantle played, baseball was King. There were only 3 TV channels, and when the Yankees played on TV, it was hard to find a TV NOT tuned into it.

There was damn near no one in the USA who didn't know who Mickey Mantle was.

Hate to tell ya, but most Americans have NEVER knowingly played a Garth Brooks tune. (and I like most country music - but most people don't)

The last time he came to Memphis he played 3 shows and ended up playing a 4th that wasn't scheduled because not every one got a ticket for the first 3. He really does try to make sure his fans can see him and do it affordably

The Mick is a god!!! Brooks has been reduced to being a sometime performer and extra on his wife's cooking show. We are mere mortals compared to him from Saginaw, OK

7 World Series rings
20X All Star
4X HR champ
3X AL MVP

Could open up a bar...could close down a bar sometimes in the same day without leaving!!!

Brought his wife and girlfriend to his HOF induction.

These are not the actions of a mere mortal.

yep, these youngsters really can't put that into proper perspective, he was THE man in his day, and not to start a 10 page side debate, he played most of his career with a pretty fricked up body, knees shot, partied his arse of every night, and still is/was considered one of the greatest athletes of all time, incredible speed with those fricked up knees, switch hitter, etc....
