The St. George incorporation is a means to an end, and that end is a new school district. If it ever comes to that, that's when you're really going to see the NBR crew pull out the shady tactics.

I don't think they'll be able to stop it if St. George gets incorporated.

What's the soonest St. George could become a reality with the voting and legal process that will follow?

As previously stated, I have zero affiliation with Baton Rouge, but reading all of this makes me happy.

Race baiting, incompetent leadership has no place in government. I wish st George the best of luck.

The people in charge would rather everything rot and they have control than things succeed and they don’t get their beak as wet.

It would depend on a vote in the state legislature to get approval, meaning a 2/3 majority.

It was blocked last time around under the argument of “become a city first” so I am wondering what tree they will tell the city to cut down with a herring when they come back.

My grandpa was a judge, always joked about how many bills/laws had clauses with an arbitrary "population in excess of 400,000"....because in effect they only applied to New Orleans.

Good!

That governmental agency needs to realize what it’s like when you only give a crap about a certain race of people and how life has consequences

Hell, LSUPD is paying way better than BRPD and is civil service protected. Smart move for those trying to get out... will at least buy them some time to find something else.

Oh lawd, how are they going to build their multi million dollar collapsing libraries?

The EBRPL system, as well as BREC, is Parish-wide and wouldn't be affected by St. George at all.

Incoming multi-million dollar study and commission formed on how the budget cuts will affect the government going forward

Per the article that’s already started:

The mayor's office tells WBRZ the city's Finance Department paid $17,500 to complete the Study, which began in June 2018 and concluded in September that same year.

Seeing as the petition was done before this law, wouldn't that legislation only be applicable to new requests going forward? Doesn't that fall under the ex post facto limitations imposed on states?

Jon Bel supports Broom's stance against St George so his legal team would probably argue that redefining voter eligibility for elections that haven't happened yet does not fall under ex post facto. The St. George folks would need some sort of precedent to work from. Or maybe go at it from a gerrymandering angle?

You don't get it. Our community leaders need all that extra grain for their big brains to use.

3 years before they have their own functioning city. 5+ years to have their own school district. And that’s IF everything passes. Even if this first vote is successful, there are still many hurdles to overcome before they can get their own school system.

I used to live in the area and was a supporter, but I couldn’t wait that long so I left and put my kids in private school.

JBE needs every Republican vote he can get. If he supports SB63, he will piss off every Republican in the state, not just the SG area. Even the moderate voters will turn on him because of voter disenfranchisement.

Curious question...

With it looking like this will happen and the "devastating" effect it will have on the CITY of Baton Rouge, not parish, then, what are the chances of the city of BR admitting defeat and asking St George to stay, yet being allowed to start their own school district, which is all they wanted in the beginning? Or, are the people of St. George just completely ticked off and for them, they are in this all or nothing now?

With all the crap they pulled to defeat this, I'd say that ship has sailed long ago

Yep. And that assumes that SWB et all would cooperate or that the state CBC wouldn’t kill an ISD in the legislature out of hand.

I pray your assessment is correct.

That said, I don't see SB63 getting to JBE's desk for a signature.
