Thought I saw one once on the way to Arkansas. Don't know if I was in Mississippi or still in Louisiana, but we were already excited because there was a deer in the middle of the road. Almost had to come to a complete stop because the deer just stood there. So the family is still buzzing about that, and we go a little further and off the side of the same road on a big piece of cleared land I see a damn black bear standing by the side of a pond. I was freaking ecstatic and yelled, "LOOK, A FREAKING BEAR!!!!" We get closer and it's a goddamn painted wooden cutout of a bear. Oh well, at least we saw a deer...

They're pretty common in NELA these days, wasn't like that when I was a kid. Did W&F reinsert them into the area?

o visit a friend and saw a bear not giving two sh*ts. First bear I've seen in LA and thought it was cool.

There are a ton in the Tensas, Richland, East/West Carroll area. My friend works for Wildflife and Fisheries and told me they do not have a great idea the number of bears from NWLA down to the separate population down south. They track a lot of them but they only have a guesstimate of the total population.

One came strolling through the middle of Vidalia earlier this spring. Freaked some people out. Truth is, the reintroduction programs in Buckhorn and the refuge up around Tallulah has been VERY successful and they are expanding their ranges very quickly all over NE and central La. I hunt at a lease that borders the refuge, and they are literally everywhere. Gotta check the Deer stand before you bounce up in one. Hopefully a hunting season soon, but as of now you better have claw marks on your back and be missing an ear if you pop one or they will put your tail under the jail!

Didn't a guy get fined like 100K when he volunteered that he shot one by mistake thinking it was a hog?

Grim... do you have 300K laying around?

Black bears are all uo and down the Mississippi and Atchafalaya corridors now. There are 3 main populations...one near Tensas, one around the area OP was in, and one down in the Atchafalaya Delta area (Morgan City, Franklin).

With the bear being delisted, and some populations (especially the Tensas subpop) becoming nuisances, there will likely be a very conservative season on them within the next 5 to 10 years. If I recall right, there cannot be a hunting season on a delisted species for a minimum of 5 years after delisting. It's been a while since I took Environmental Law in college though.

As for the Bald Eagles that others have mentioned. If you go down around Paradis, there are Bald Eagles all over. Saw probably a dozen mature and juvenile bald eagles sitting on a levee eating armadillo on the half shell that they had stolen from vultures.
