Go for a year, as a resume builder, then head back.

Do it man. I'm your age also and I don't want to be one to give lie advice, but sometimes you have to take a leap of faith. You never know what can happen if you don't try. Worst case scenario you absolutely hate it and move back. Best scenario, you enjoy it, make good money, and meet new people in the process. Never know where it will take you.

You can always come back home, you can never go back in time and change something.

Go.

I passed up an opportunity back in the late 90s (when I was your age) for an awesome job because I over thought it. Don't make that mistake.

Thanks

If I were single I would love to live in Portland, Austin, Denver, NOLA, etc. and would take the job in a heartbeat.

Now? Married, 2 kids? Nah. I like low cost of living, small town life, and easy traffic.

I took a job in Denver after graduating this May. Have a serious gf who finishes in 1 year. I plan to enjoy my 20's there and then come back home when I'm ready to have kids, etc.

No, I would be living and working in WA. A poster pointed out the tax situation in the thread I started a few weeks ago when I was still interviewing.

want to do stuff like climbing

I'm your man. After next weekend, god willing, I'll have summited all ten major mountains in Oregon. I can point you towards the best climbing club.

When it comes to outdoor activities there's no end in Oregon. As the seasons change, so do the activities. Many activities are very close to the area you'll live in.

Also, when you feel like you need some sunshine all you have to do is head over the mountains. They get over 300 sunshiny days a year.

I think I'm going to accept. There's so much more to do there, it's a pay raise and big bonus potential, I'm young and single, I will be able to use my degree, and it could open up more doors than I can imagine right now.

Thats so awesome about your climbing. I've wanted to climb Rainier for a long time now.

Wait, you're saying Portland, OR has a lower COL than Sarasota, FL?

I find that difficult to believe. And while I think you have all the talking points covered, consider the weather difference.

You will get far less sunshine in either OR or WA than you do in FL. You will get far more rain. I know someone who moved from Seattle because of that. Loved the town, hated the weather.

Just FYI.

Portland has better weather than Seattle, not as much bullshite. Seattle weather is horrific. Portland summers are really nice, mid seventies, some eighties, always cools off at night, rarely rains.

Winter is just drizzle. Constantly.

I would, but that's me. I, unlike others, am not afraid of the unknown and can make friends easy. You're young too. I would in a heartbeat.

I haven't done Rainier yet, hoping to in September. I'm doing Adams (WA) this weekend and my final peak in Oregon (Jefferson) the following weekend.

Go. You shouldn't be worrying about pay at 24 as much as you should about your potential for growth. Ask some questions on the typical career path people follow after spending time in that role and figure out if that's something you really want to do.

I left Louisiana for the northeast after graduating, have been here for 3 years with the same company and love it. I started in an analyst role not much different than yours and eventually got promoted to a client facing role making significantly more than they started me at. Go work hard and have fun for a few years while you don't have any responsibilities. If you hate it, you can always come back.

Also, I got about the same raise that you have on the table and it bumped me into the next tax bracket, so while I'm grossing 10k more a year I'm barely netting more money per paycheck. Keep that in mind.

Just rains more often. Probably will get less precipitation in either than many places in Florida.

What's the best way for me to get started in this? I have zero experience in climbing, though I am in really good shape.
