Seattle seafood > New Orleans seafood, and I love some NOLA seafood. Much cleaner and just as many if not more options

He is 24 though. He is at the age where he needs to be living for himself and not for his family.

You only get one life on this earth, you can't live it to please your family. Your 20s is the time to explore and find yourself before you settle down. Any decent parent will encourage their child to do what makes them happy and not be selfish and try to guilt their child in staying closer to them.

Sixty grand in Portland seems like a stretch. It's not super expensive, but isn't cheap, and taxes are much higher, though none on sales. Washington has no income tax, working in Oregon I assume you would be subject to Oregon income tax! no?

You can live a decent life, but I wouldn't be giving up Florida for that wage unless there is big growth potential.

I wouldn't be living in Portland. Portland is right on the border of OR and WA, and I would be right across the river on the WA side.

I also think there is a lot more room for professional growth that comes with this offer. It's a much bigger company than where I'm at now, with international offices.

You pay OR tax on income in that situation?

I have a family member there in Northwest Portland.

No, I would be living and working in WA. A poster pointed out the tax situation in the thread I started a few weeks ago when I was still interviewing.

True, but there are also parents who don't "guilt" their children into such things.

Thanks to Uncle Sam, we have spent a lot of time away...and there is a lot that I have missed - like the death of two grandparents; nephews/nieces; and a lot of other things. Not that I am complaining, though, because so much good has also come out of it. It's just that there have been a lot of things missed that won't be repeated.

I am not saying that he should/shouldn't do anything. If those are important factors in his life, then it is something to think about.

True. What is your family life like now? Nieces or nephews close by? Close with parents?

Exactly. Not everyone is guilted by their parents. Some people actually enjoy living close to family members. If it's something that you enjoy, is that ok?

Close with parents, but I wouldn't blink at moving to Shanghai let alone Portland. I absolutely do not need to be close to them, geographically.

Sounds like a company to be with if you ever wanted to possibly move abroad. Esp Australia. You can't just up and move to Australia now. They are really picky about visas there now. But move because a company transfers you there? Seems like that would be an in for you.

you will hate the weather there-

and 10K is not enough for me to move to Oregon

you also realize when you move that far geographically it is going to be difficult to move back to the south-

Companies tend to recruit in local regions first

Cool. Go for it. Watch out for that tax bracket stuff mentioned earlier. Could end up you think you're getting a raise, but not really.

Well, Vancouver is kind of sleepy, but so is Sarasota. I'd assume you could get a sick place reasonably priced in Vancouver.

Portland is a great place. You'll have a tough time finding Mrs right there unless you enjoy the earthy women. There is amazing marijuana on the cheap. It's clean, well-kept, friendly.

Don't let you family hold you back. I left home and went far, I'm never going back. If you want to give it a run, and you think there is potential, just go. Don't overthink it. You can always go home, you're fricking twenty four.

You really are over thinking this.

Odds are very high now that you will not make the move IMO.

Very close with all. We rotated back to the area in DEC 2012 and will be retiring from here. Fortunately, my parents are both still living. The only regrets are the things missed. And, also, we have been very fortunate to swing East coast duty stations.
