People are a bit more liberal.
I think you are being a bit conservative here

I think my main concern is whether making ~$60k is enough to live there.
You're 24 and single? Of course you can live there on 60K, especially if you're sensible about where and what type of place you live in. My sister lived and worked there for 30 years until she moved back east in 2012. She loved it.

Go for it. You will regret not taking the chance.

I expect this.

you can find a job in your field closer to home that wouldn't require moving across the country
I think moving across the country would be pretty exciting, and Portland has a helluva lot more for me to do than Sarasota does.

I assume you'd be living near the Vancouver area if you'll be in WA and working in Portland.
The job is also near Vancouver, so I would be living and working in WA.

You will love Washington, I hope to move their sometime in the next 10 years. Gorgeous landscape, great beer, and amazing seafood (better than Louisiana)

You take any job that has analyst in the title...period.
That being said. I moved for a job that had an analyst title and a low salary and it was the best decision I've ever made, but that was due to my work on getting that job to open doors for interviews.

I would expect with a little patience, you can find a job in your field closer to home
This is the sad part of that statement.
Why would he want to stay close to home? It's 2014. You can be anywhere you need to be in the world within 24 hours of traveling.
I just don't understand why it is general understood that everyone wants to stay close to home. I love "home" but I never want to, nor will live there again.
"You grew up in Houma? Well, after college you better go back to Houma."
I'll never understand that mindset.

Cost of living is less out there? Interesting. Does Oregon have state income tax? Also, you could have a great time with the greenies/hippies/etc...

Besides shrimp, yes, he's serious.

Washington doesn't have state income tax, which is where I'd be living and working. Vancouver WA is pretty much spitting distance from Portland.

Thats why I said it....you are 1000% better off working 2 years for shite to get legit experience (on paper)...than spending 60k on a MBA that means dick....or some dime a dozen job title that leads to nothing

Also, I got about the same raise that you have on the table and it bumped me into the next tax bracket, so while I'm grossing 10k more a year I'm barely netting more money per paycheck. Keep that in mind.
You'll get it back at the end of the year.
Either that or adjust your W-4

quote:I agree with you for the most part but "analyst" is thrown around a lot now. I wouldn't just jump at any analyst position, but the fact that this gives the OP a chance to use his degree would have been enough for me to take it if I were in his shoes. It's all about having a story and showing progression towards that next job you want.

You'll be fine with 60K in Oregon. Really, it's just NYC, San Diego, San Francisco, and a select few other cities you may have a problem.

I say go for it. You are at the perfect time in your life to do something like this. You are young with nothing tying you down. Worst thing that can happen is you hate it and end up moving back home.

Solid advice from nurse. The only thing that may/may not weigh in is if you have family that you are very close to (relationship wise), especially aging parents, etc. It's not like you can hop in the car and drive over - and at the income level doesn't really give a whole lot for flying back and forth along with trying to live.
