I started regularly running at 34. I'm 52 now.
After you do it for a few years you can blow off a lot stretching due to muscle memory, better condition, etc.
Also, do not drink a lot of water before a long run. Stitches hurt.
My first Classic, in '97, I drank water at every mile. Big mistake.

It's probably already been mentioned but if you're only going to run, at least vary it. Do sprints with rest, intervals at different speeds, etc. "Going for a jog" at a slow, moderate pace does no good.

You should never have to stop and drink anything while running under 10 miles.
Unless you're hungover and you're running to sweat out the night before. Which I do frequently.

There's no point in running over 5k.

Remember to enjoy it and make it "me" time. At first it will be work but it is rewarding and addictive!

Great advice...
Until you build up your stamina it feels like a lot of work, after the stamina has been built up it's addictive.

Go buy a Garmin GPS/HR monitor from Amazon. All of the information keeps your mind busy.
I got my greatest gains by slowing down, or staying slow, managing my heart rate and adding distance. Then getting quicker.

I never stretch.
Stretching is just wasting time that could be used running

Do: take a shite before you run.
Don't: run if you haven't taken a shite.
The worse is going on a long run and having to shite behind a tree because you didn't take care of it before you started.

There's a lot of information on barefoot running form and how it can help you avoid injury.
It's not so much BF running as it is running with proper form. BF will force you to run with much better form right off the bat but you can still carry bad habits over.

ChiRunning (which explains how to run with correct form).
I like this method a lot and routinely refer back to my copy of the book.

pay attention to your achilles heal/tendons ... once they go "sore", they stay sore ... forever ...

don't do it. at least not how people do it when they become 'runners'.
if you are going to run, find a field and run sprints/walk intervals. that "running" thing people do is really hard on your body - particularly your joints and foot bones. It even jars your spine and your skull more than you really need to be experiencing. Check out how many of the older folks who are getting knee and hip replacements used to run.
...just my two cents.

Take it slow at first, don't come out the gates the first week all gung-ho like I always do and get shin splints.

Great advice......but also you haven't lived until you've pooped in the empty lot between two houses and sacrificed a sock.

Wear low cut socks. Anything over those kankles will cut off circulation.
