Just give up now. If you are really doing 15 minute miles (while sprinting, jogging, and walking); you have to be on your death bed to be that freaking slow. Stop trolling, and for God's sake; will the idiots trying to give real advice... stop feeding the troll!

There is some truth to that article, but it takes a long time (years) for the casual runner to not see the benefits of running, in terms of weight loss.
Also, muscle weighs more than fat.

Since the OP has been living a sedentary lifestyle, I can guarantee he will see weight loss, if he sticks with it.

Age - 41 Moderately overweight. Could stand to loose about 20-25. Running on outdoor track. I don't want to injure myself and make this any harder than it has to be. Today was my third time and I feel like I'm doing ok I just want to make sure from someone else who has been doing it for a while. Took me almost 30 minutes to run/jog/walk 2 miles today.

You LP country bastard. Glad to see you going out there and getting active

Are you frickin stupid? A lot of people that age who have been sedentary will start at out at 15 min miles. It's not a simple as saying he can walk a 15 min mile. He goes out running, has to stop to catch breath, starts walking slowly, runs again, repeats. Imagine a newb like him like as an experienced runner running 1/4 mile pickups in a mile. It's never as fast as a decent paced mile.

Dont' give up MJ2. Stick with it. Give it 6 weeks and look at it this way(I've told several newbs over the years): Summer is the BEST time to start a running program b/c by fall you'll be like OH shite I CAN DO THIS as fitness combined with lower temps and humidity will make you faster and more confident.

i always run in the hottest part of the day. this shows i'm a badass and people don't look down on you for running 10 minute miles when its 95 and 100% humid.

Always warm up for at least 5 minutes, even if it is just a fast walk or a slow jog.

A lot of advice on stretching in the thread, key is to figure out what works best for you. For me warm up and light stretch, then full stretch when finished. As you run longer times and distances your body will tell you what you parts you need to stretch more. For me priority is quad and back, calves sometimes, and hammy's barely ever unless its a long run or intense workout.

160 can be really "light" for a 5'9 male adult. Has much more to do with muscle tone and body mass. 180 isn't a bad number for an athletic 5'9 guy. I'm 5'10 and it's my goal weight. I'm at 190 now but most people guess my weight is at 175.

My point is that it's mostly just a number. Without looking at other factors, it means almost nothing.

True sterry. I've been a 'runner' in some capacity since 84. I've been fit, fast, fat, slow. No matter how fit I am, I can NOT run well in heat in humidity when it's over about 2 miles. I know that sounds like common sense but it's not if you do some research. Some folks go 'oh it's hot' and still perform. I have never been able to. 8 yrs old to 18, 28, 38.
TLDR I'm a giant seeping pussy when it's over 80 degrees and running 3+ miles.

1. Make sure that you run at a conversational pace. When you're first starting out, try to not worry about how long it takes you to get your run in, just run/jog at a slow enough pace that you could easily carry on a conversation while doing it. If you start to get winded, slow down, even if it means walking. If you keep at it, you'll get a feel for running at a conversational pace, and then as your fitness improves, your times will naturally come down. But if you try to force it by running faster than you should, at least early on, you may get burned out or risk an injury.

2. Run almost every day, but definitely not everyday. If you only run once a week, you won't see much benefit. If you run 3 times a week, you will. If you run 5 times a week, you'll see results faster. But don't run every day, give your body at least 1 day to recover.

You are right. It really depends on a persons frame. That said if a guy is 5'9 and 180 at a low bodyfat he is going to be packing a lot of muscle.

Do: take a shite before you run.

Don't: run if you haven't taken a shite.

The worse is going on a long run and having to shite behind a tree because you didn't take care of it before you started.

Sound advice here. When i ran a half for the first time my body wasn't use to getting up so early (5am) and drinking coffee. I couldn't shite at all. I was so scared i was going to shite myself the whole race

This is just me, but sprinting if you don't know what you are doing is problematic. Thought you wanted to lose weight, not compete.

Sprinting gives you ALOT more bang for the buck when it comes to burning calories than distance running does and it'll have anaerobic carryover effect after you stop whereas distance running quits burning calories when you quit running.

No, are you? He can walk at a 4 mile per hour pace. That's 2 miles in 30 minutes. WALKING! He's doing it wrong if he is sprinting/jogging/walking and still taking 30 minutes to do 2 miles.

If he is as sedentary as you say, he shouldn't be sprinting anyway. He should be taking it slowly. But not a 4 mph pace. 5 to 6 mph would be a better way for him to go. Now go back to being stupid.
