Most amusement parks are in areas similar to N.O. East in other cities because the land is cheap. Have you been to 6 Flags in Atlanta? I also see no problem with issuing tax credits in order to promote the development of the park. The city and state are currently collecting no taxes on a blighted property and granting tax credits would allow them to have the property improved with private money and also allow them to reap the benefit of sales taxes collected when the park is built. Tax credits also don't allow entities to pay no tax they allow the payment of reduced taxs.

Yeah, I really only said Pontchartrain Park because my dad always talks about going there growing up. I'm not from New Orleans like him, so I only went to Jazzland a couple times back in the day.

Nitpicking, but it was Pontchartrain Beach.

this actually would be a decent idea. especially for hosting large tournaments, high school all star games etc.

the sale of the scrap metal from on site would likely pay for a lot of the costs of field prep and infrastructure

i just can't see putting up a business that failed in the exact same spot the first time. Theme Parks are a dead business unless you are in a ridiculously densely populated area, or you are Disney.

Why do people say "New Orleans East can't support that?" It's not incumbent on part of the city to support it. It's a regional thing. And NO East gets a bad rap because of the blighted property on the interstate. Anyone who actually gets off the interstate (yeah what courage!) and drove down Lake Forest Blvd., Kensington Blvd, Winchester Park, Bullard, etc. would see a pretty different East.

This. While some of the most blighted areas in the city are in the East, it's got a lot of nice areas too. I think people would be surprised at some of them.

A lot of well to do upper middle class black and Asian families out there.

Perfect place to launder money. So many cash tills, small currency, costumes, carnies, strangers, and tourists. I'm getting a little chub thinking about it. Maybe they could accept bitcoin also?

Almost every theme park built in the US in the last 20 years not owned by Disney or Universal has failed. Hell, even the parks those two built were no where near as successful as they hoped.

Established parks can make a TON of money, but the cost to build a park is so high these days you basically have to go into it assuming you aren't going to pay off your start up costs for YEARS.

If they could follow the business model that Disney Movie Studios or Universal have, it could work. Find some big movie company and partner with them. Have movie themed rides and a working studio.

That would be a great place, plenty of land.

An idea I would propose for the East would be a sports complex.

A F1 track (like Austin just built) with an Oval route option for Nascar and Indycar. A dirt track, a drag track.
Two Highschool football stadiums. One highschool baseball stadium.
Practice fields. Hotel. Large batting cage complex. Indoor practice area. Basketball indoor gym, outdoor hoops. Tennis complex, volleyball area. Inside ice skating rink.

Could make it the home of most state tournaments.
Use it for practice fields for visiting bowl teams/superbowl teams.

lure a national level race. Possibly international event.

Have a place for kids to get sports mentorship and camps year round.
Be able to practice for events. Could train olympic teams there. Could get a whole generation of local kids to be interested in new sports.

Would solve high school football scheduling issues. Would allow smaller schools places to play big games.

Great idea, I'll be your business manager/COO. Let me know where to send my resume.

I could get behind that. Its crazy how the city does not utilize the lakefront at all, and instead shuts it down because there were a few drownings.

I bought a season pass the first year it opened. I went once and never did actually get my card. It was a little thugish to say the least.

But hasn't there been a bunch of voodoo practicing squatters there sacrificing babies and such? It could be haunted.....

Wait, brainstorm!!
1)Get scary ghost costume
2)scare people off site
3)wait for property value to plummet
4)buy real estate at dirt cheap prices
5)profit

I should get away with it, as long as no meddling kids show up.

Cause that's what ends up happening because most white people think they're gonna get murdered as soon as they come over the highrise. Just look at how many people in this thread have said it was in a bad neighborhood even though the closest neighborhood to it was a country club.

The idea for a sports complex at the site was proposed and analyzed several years ago. One group actually did an economic vitality study and backed away - apparently, there's not enough infrastructure in the area to support a sportsplex.
