Wasn't the main problem with Jazzland was that ghetto parents were dropping their kids off for the park to babysit thus scaring away the people with money?

I didn't find this to be a problem at all. Like I said, I went every Wednesday night with the family for quite a while, and didn't find any "demographic" issues. With it being located in the East, I really expected it to have a rampant tPoS problem, but just never did encounter any issues in that regard.

I was at an industry trade show a few years ago and the city was there trying get people to submit proposals.

Problem is no legit player in the industry wants to touch this.

That would be a great place, plenty of land.

An idea I would propose for the East would be a sports complex.

A F1 track (like Austin just built) with an Oval route option for Nascar and Indycar. A dirt track, a drag track.
Two Highschool football stadiums. One highschool baseball stadium.
Practice fields. Hotel. Large batting cage complex. Indoor practice area. Basketball indoor gym, outdoor hoops. Tennis complex, volleyball area. Inside ice skating rink.

Could make it the home of most state tournaments.
Use it for practice fields for visiting bowl teams/superbowl teams.

lure a national level race. Possibly international event.

Have a place for kids to get sports mentorship and camps year round.
Be able to practice for events. Could train olympic teams there. Could get a whole generation of local kids to be interested in new sports.

Would solve high school football scheduling issues. Would allow smaller schools places to play big games.
add an indoor track as well. louisiana could use another one of those

ETA: cant believe i just bumped this. got carried away

Here's the proposal that was submitted on February 28th.

LINK

Hate on it all you want, but I'm excited about it. Lots of potential. It's very ambitious and has the right ingredients for success.

NOLA is different today than it was pre-Katrina. More money, more disposable income, more kids, more families from out of town, more people that want a fun, kid-friendly experience.

The people who ran Jazzland had a good idea and terrible skills. Six Flags came in, did some good things, but made the park look like every other regional Six Flags park.

A reboot that brought back the Louisiana-centric theming could work. They would have to set the prices high enough to both keep out the troublemakers AND pay their employees enough so they are not competing with WalMart and McDonalds for employees.

We had season passes for Jazzland/Six Flags in the past. I would do it again.

It's New Orleans, so I'm guessing the government is paying for some or all of this?

No way this works. People in this city do not want to drive out to the New Orleans East wasteland. The only redeemable thing about the East is some Vietnamese restaurants.

5)profit

And you would get away with it if it weren't for those meddling kids.

Just read through the proposal and it's really good. The addition of a working studio is really smart. IMO the park would do better being partnered with a large movie company to help branding (i.e MGM, Universal), instead of solely relying on Louisiana based themes.

It looks promising, I'm just skeptical about the success of any theme parked not named Disney or Universal.

There are tax credits for the studio and the theaters, but the rest is coming from private sources. The company is even willing to buy the land from New Orleans to own it all outright.

Also, if you read the proposal, the original park was profitable, but it didn't hit projections. There were problems (lack of shade, etc) that the new ownership seeks to rectify.

As a theme park fan, the proposal also has encouraging things that have caught my eye. The drop tower would actually be themed to a lighthouse. The Jester coaster would receive a faux mountain. The MegaZeph is getting new trains, a tunnel, and music.

In other words, this plan is a step up from what the park was. And at 25 minutes from my house, I'd definitely get an annual pass.

The $4 million in ride repairs seems very low.
The $15 million in new rides seems impossibly low, especially if that is supposed to cover both the new rides and the new waterpark.

None of the financial numbers being tossed around, according to the proposal, are for the waterpark. That would be a later phase, with funding to be determined later. All of this money is just for the theme park and the backlot.

Further, the proposal calls for only saving/repairing three rides. The new rides they are planning to buy do not appear to be anything terribly fancy or expensive.

I think this is meant to be a park that gives people something to do, has shows and music, and has rides. As opposed to a thrill-type park.

I also question whether enough money is budgeted. I am sure those numbers will go up.

I went to Cedar Point in Ohio this summer, what would I do for a park like that around here. Granted, CP is known as one of the top coaster parks in the world with 2 of the top 10 fastest (or highest? I dont remember) coasters in the world!

Same, but I think if it gets approved/when the proposal gets more publicity, there will be other investors interested.

If it's successful, the rides will come later.

this jumped out at me too.

There is a market for this if they do it right. They need more shaded areas, cooling stations, and no-black top surfaces that can melt shoes in the summer sun.

As much as I'd like, I don't think it would support a F1 track. You have to look at the demographics of the area and what facilities the local economy has to support one. Demographics would also rule out a Nascar track, which I am glad they do. Honestly with a sports arena, most of it would sit idle for a good part of the year.

What I forsee I sometimes like a big plant or warehouse structure for a much larger company, or set of companies. Hell, even a plant that builds cars would be nice, and with the intercoastal being not too far away, it could be a possibility for shipping cars around the world. Of course some major dirt work would need to be done, but it could be possible and worth it in the long run.

There just isn't much you can do there.
