Cops, stalled cars on side of road.. Sudden road closures...debris IN the road.. And the chat comments for major traffic jams.. You'll not only know something bad is coming but most of the time you can also find out exactly what's up from people stopped right at the source who are having a conversation about it.

Info even the cops don't have yet.

I got a report of object in the road and when I got there it was a deer carcass in the right-hand lane of a4 lane 70mph expressway. I posted that additional detail in the comments and had people thanking me for hours.

It's great to get that kind of audio alert at 2am on the interstate so you can be alert to it because the morons around you won't know and they're more of a problem than the actual road debris and slam on their brakes or swerve at the last second into the left lane.

That actually happened to me coming back from Memphis to Nashville one night.

Waze is like eBay. It works because that's where everyone is.

This is the one that drives me crazy. In LA they have a broken down abandoned car on the side of the interstate every 1/4 mile. I get tired of it cutting out the radio every minute for "hazzard ahead" alerts.

Just turn off the voice. I find it annoying.

If you spend a good amount of time in your car, waze is worth it.

You can change this in the settings and Waze will not warn you of hazards on the shoulder.

I've only read the OP, but if you're traveling, the waze app is awesome.

Has anyone extensively tested it against Google maps and the current beta testing version of Google maps?

I've used both for a while now. I've also been on a few road trips where a friends car uses waze while I use Google Maps.

I like that waze informs you of cops and debris, etc. But with my experience Google Maps is better at rerouting to fastest route.

The trip to Austin, the waze users were rerouted and ended up getting there about 30 minutes after the Google Maps users. Same thing happened on my trip to Dallas.

Waze also seems to kill battery and use more data than Google.

Since Google owns Waze, it seems like they could use the unique data collected by each service GoogleMaps traffic analysis seems more comprehensive, while Waze provides invaluable information regarding the specific traffic conditions and hazards.

In other words, combining the what (Google Traffic analysis; Waze traffic analysis) and the why (Waze reports), the data could be used to really increase the efficiency and reliability of travel in ways beyond just fastest route.

It could identify spots that have higher accident risk, whether the listed speed limits are appropriate for a different spot, traffic infrastructure needs.

Car on shoulder hazard can be a pain in the arse especially driving through larger cities. You can go to settings, alerts on route, and turn off "hazard on shoulder".

Waze is awesome. Use it every day. Been a user for over 3 years.

My points are 373,282.
