Having two sets of olympics alternate every other year may be an issue. Doesn't seem as special.

Building these huge arenas/specialty places for short time use and the quality of the structures is poor/unsafe.

I think they should pick a permanent site in Greece or somewhere and stop rotating it around the world like they do. The winter games can stay the way they are but it's ridiculous for poor countries to spend billions of dollars on stadiums that will be abandoned within a few years. I suppose nobody's forcing countries like Brazil to host the olympics. I just think a permanent site makes more sense.

They should shut it down for like...four years. And then bring it back! Everyone would miss it so much it would be good again.

It is never boring watching America kicking someone's arse. That is like it is boring watch LSU beat people by 40. I love to see that entertainment every week.

It should rotate between 4-5 permanent venues in locations that could actually support the event. All those third world and communist countries can lick our scrotum

Also, beginning in Tokyo 2020, the host country can add five sports to the 26-sport program to help local interest. Baseball and softball should be back at least for 2020.

True.

I just think of the thrill it was to watch someone like Eric Heiden (sp?) win the events he did, in a sport that was basically unfamiliar to me, versus watching the yawn of some of the pro team sports go through the motions.

The thrill of the hockey win 36 years ago (!!!) is still there...just seems that it has become a shell of its former self.

They just need to remove sports That are already international or have all the best players in the same league anyways: basketball, golf, soccer, hockey etc.

I agree with whoever said keep it in Athens every time. And would also make it for the fringe sports only. No basketball, baseball, tennis, golf. There are bigger events for those sports so the olympics is underwhelming. But for track and field, gymnastics, swimming, etc the olympics is great.

Beijing/Shanghai

I would add Berlin, Toronto, and Seoul to your list.

The Olympics are boring now. I can't really put my finger on it though. I guess globalization makes it less exciting? People from different countries compete all the time outside of olympic events. I wouldn't mind if it disappeared.

What????? There is nothing boring about our country sticking it to the rest of the world. I love it every time we put the smackdown on some country whose citizens are known for hating us.

Terrible idea. Olympics should be held, but they should have a specified number of predetermined locations that rotate the games. Maybe 3-5 locations in varying countries able to accommodate the games.

What will people do without the irrelevant sports?
There's still the WSOP and the National Spelling Bee, both of which are carried on ESPN.

It is just a question and one I think bears some discussion. Thank you for contributing though I wish it was something new instead of one that has been previously mentioned numerous times.

Nah, keep the Olympics, but get rid of sports where the Olympics are an afterthought, like tennis, basketball, golf, etc.

If it is perfectly acceptable for you to back out of the Olympics out of convenience, the sport shouldn't be in the Olympics in the first place. In other words, the Olympics should be the pinnacle of your sport.

The Olympics lost a lot of their luster when the Cold War ended. We no longer have that USSR, East German monster to compete against.

The closest thing we've had to that since the collapse of the Soviet Union were the games in 2008 in China where we went and battled Communist China. They were using 12 year old gymnasts and shite.

2008 was the best Olympics since the end of the Cold War for that reason.

It is odd because that is the only time we see some sports that are popular elsewhere.

Google/Youtube Team Handball. Very popular worldwide but next to unknown here. Archery, Biathalons

To me it has just lost a great deal of luster.

Soccer is a U23 tournament.
