Original purposes are long gone.

Amateurism is not relevant.

Building these huge arenas/specialty places for short time use and the quality of the structures is poor/unsafe.

Corruption is rampant.

The whole Rio situation is prime example.

What will people do without the irrelevant sports? That's a lot of trainers' jobs you're trying to take away

It needs to be limited to certain parts of the world.

So far, it's fricked Rio and it did a hell of a job fricking Greece's economy, not like they weren't doing other things to screw it up.

It does seem like the Olympic movement has run its course and is nowhere near as special as it once was.

Perhaps some sort of respite followed by a renaissance is what is needed.

I don't think the Olympics should end, but there should be reform toning the scale down. The massive spending projects that only hurt the taxpayers and locals needs to end. And, obviously, the corruption needs to be addressed.

But I see a lot of good coming from international athletic competition.

It's time to stop having them in third world countries.

I'd take a slightly different approach. Instead of bidding and letting the IOC take bribes, or rewarding fascist regimes like red China, make Athens the permanent host. That would solve most of the problems you mentioned.

Greatly reduced opportunity for kickbacks. The venues will be used again and again and will be worth the investment. It would fit in with the tradition the modern Olympics were meant to honor.

Amateurism doesn't need to be relevant. Training and the cost of living are too expensive and athletes need sponsors. The World Cup does just fine without the pretense of amateur athletes.

Plus three of your four arguments would apply to the NCAA.

Truth. We need a real rival like the USSR again to make the Olympics relevant. Moments like 1972 basketball and 1980 ice hockey need to start happening instead of us being so dominant like we were in 2004 softball (outscored opponents 51-1) that they take the sport and its male equivalent (baseball) out of the Olympics altogether.

Most Gold Medals in Olympics
2012: USA
2008: China (USA 2nd)
2004: USA
2000: USA
1996: USA
1992: Unifed Team (former USSR) (USA 2nd)
1988: Soviet Union (USA 3rd)
1984: USA (no East Germany or USSR)
1980: Soviet Union (no USA)
1976: Soviet Union (USA 3rd)
1972: Soviet Union (USA 2nd)
1968: USA

That would definitely help things. I was thinking about maybe 4 or 5 places throughout the world. Larger cities obviously, civilized countries.

Maybe scaling it down somehow. Instead, they seemingly are growing. Do we really need tennis played by the same pros that play almost year round? Golf-same.

Candidly, and obviously I don't know and will never know, but just how much could winning a gold medal as a member of the original 'Dream Team' where they just crtushed everyone, really mean to one of those multi-millionaires who won so much hardware of various kinds?

Just musing.

End them. They already have world championships for all these sports anyway.

I think the world should build the Olympic facilities somewhere and have them in the same place every time the Olympic Games come around.

The only cities outside of the USA that could handle a modern Olympics are

Beijing/Shanghai
Tokyo
London
Paris
Sydney
Rome

The most impressive bid I have seen has been Dallas 2024, but they chose LA to go up against Budapest, Paris and Rome. Surprisingly, the joint bid of Muslim countries Saudi Arabia and Bahrain (in which mens events would be in Saudi Arabia and women events in Bahrain since women aren't allowed to compete in sports in SA) was rejected.
