The utter joke that is the site selection committee is the only reason I could be onboard with a stoppage.

The corruption is shameless. The recent Russian winter games, Beijing, an unprepared Rio?

They have flirted with disaster for 3-4 events now. What's next? The Kabul Games? Yemen?

Why should Greece hold it for any reason other than Olympics started there? It makes little to no sense at this point, take Greece out of Europe and they are a boarderline 3rd world country today.

As much as I think its ridiculous that the games are held anywhere besides the top 10 or so wealthiest cities in the world, who are we to judge who "wants" to host. Yes its ridiculous that Rio, Athens, etc wanted to pay for the games but thats on those idiots not me in America bankrolling the TV contracts.

Additionally, they do a decent enough job of helping to pay for things long term by turning the stuff into other uses. Rio is hosting the world cup for an example.

The real answer is to stop the selection committee corruption.

Finally, US got screwed by that idiot that set off the bomb in Atl. Its going to take a new terrorist attack at a newer games for the committee to get over that.

Having been to Budapest 3 years ago an olypmics there would be a corruption nightmare. It was an amazing city but not one ready for that scale of an event.

OP...
Have you personally suffered some sort of loss due to the Olympics games or their location? Are you a sponsor or in any way affiliated with them ? If not, why do you even care?
Look towards your own municipality, state, or federal government if you wish to address poor decision making, corruption, and wasteful spending.

For me the TV coverage is way over the top. They started to cater to the female viewership a long time ago.

No, they should just keep it greece

Why rotate every four years, and squander billions in the process, when you could keep it in one country? Greece certainly needs the help, and they have the historical legitimacy for what little it's worth.

In order;
No, no. No, and just marginally as I live in a country that participates in them. I don't care per se. It was just a topic for some interesting discussion. Maybe we need a few more topics like this and fewer of the following:
-Is ---- trashy?
-Rate your trashiness.
-WYHI?
-Traffic! Why does it exist and what should be done about it?
-Which is better, N.O. or B.R.?
-Cultcha, is it for everyone?

You know the threads have a topic and if it doesn't interest you to have thoughtful, adult chats about them, by all means don't click on them.

As for my own community and THOSE discussions, I don't think they would be of interest to the rest of the O-T as I live far, far away. I didn't feel that way about the Olympics topic though and judging by the percentage of decent responses, many others feel the same.

Maybe YOU have an interest in the Olympics of some sort and I'm stepping on your shrimp boots?

It needs to start repeating locations that already have the infrastructure, maybe 4 locations for summer and 4 for winter. Off the top of my head, I think Salt Lake City, Tokyo, and London would be good choices.

Wow. Sorry I rustled your jimmies. While i agree that yours is a timely, fresh topic, I just thought it was a stretch to worry about something that happens every four years when there is much lower hanging fruit to be picked. I concur that it's a boondoggle for Rio, as it is for many others host cities. But I'd remind you that the site was chosen years ago when Rio had a bustling economy and was on the upswing. At the time the sight was chosen it seemed like a great choice. But that was years ago. Who knew it would turn out this way?

Sorry you got offended at what was intended to be a thoughtful, adult question?

Does this mean if LA gets the 2024 games we can add football? That would be very entertaining.

You could. In fact, the seeds have been planted.

Taking out the non-"Olympic" sports like men's basketball and soccer, for many of these sports, it is the pinnacle of the sport.

The Olympics mean more to figure skating than the world championships do.

If you remove the Olympics, in most cases you can elevate the status of the various world championships.

The Olympics works because for 15 or so days, the focus is on athletes who never really have the focus on them at any other time.

the obvious solution is to remove the corruption and put them in places where there really doesn't need to be much construction needed.

The IOC is corrupt, but so is FIFA and I'm guessing many other sports organizations as well. It's more like, the world is corrupt.

I have long since lost interest in the Olympics and could care less who wins- corruption, doping, etc., etc.

It's another 20th century anachronism now. Time to put an end to the Olympics. When you start letting Jamaicans on the bobsled track you have officially jumped the shark.

Agreed. Olympics and world soccer are one in the same. How I miss the days when the US stood tall as an example and put our "amateurs only" up against all the cheatin' aholes the world over. By the way, we did pretty well at that.

Now it's just like all the rest....who can cash-in the most. You think there is a pro athlete who gives a ratsass about representing us? It's nothing more than "how can I cash in on this" and so the little bopeeps can watch it on their Iphone and comment on critters.

The Olympics lost a lot of their luster when the Cold War ended. We no longer have that USSR, East German monster to compete against.

And both countries were juicing/doping like crazy.
Yea,some in the US were doing the same but not even close to those 2 especially the GDR
