Dude did it all, with a woman on each arm, and a drink in his hand.

He was charismatic, certainly, but he also got his country destroyed.

Exactly. Wasn't being sarcastic at all. He did horrible things, but you can't argue that the man wasn't an outstanding leader.

An outstanding leader wouldn't have lead his country into a war there was no way they could ever truly win

So he was great at getting people to follow but not as great at leading them to good things. Which describes a lot of famous rulers.

His people turned against him as soon as the war was over for some reason I'll never understand.
Churchill didn't run a perfect war by any means but from what I understand he was quick to distance himself from anything or decision that didn't go perfect. The Dardanelles for example

That was in WW1, and he was fired because of it.

Churchill ran wars like they were supposed to be run IMO, knowing people would die.

He was fired over that ordeal, but ended up enlisting in the Army and serving for the remainder of the war.

And while the Germans were bombin the shite out of England, he was out walking the streets with his people instead of hiding out in a bunker.

He wasn't perfect by any means, but he was a badass leader once he was given the chance.

I know that was WW1 but it showed what type of person he was. I'm not knocking him because it's almost necessary to distance yourself from shitty decisions and downplay them to be a politician. Just saying there were reasons he didn't have the best approval rating. People now act surprised that his approval rating wasn't at 95% or something

Hitler. He may have been evil, but he was one hell of a leader/motivator.

Are we determining greatness by ascent and scope of power, or by the effectiveness of that power?

By the former standards, Hitler was exceedingly successful. By the latter, he failed miserably.

Eisenhower. As a general and as president, his influence and accomplishments are hard to top. He truly was a leader of men.
