Report it. I did. The person was regularly drunk at work. Boss did nothing. The person died two weeks later of alcohol poisoning.

With all the up-votes this reply received, this exemplifies the pussification of American in general. Everyone is more concerned with covering their arse instead of being a straight up person...if there's no chance of her getting hurt, or hurting anyone else, you call her into your office and let her know that it better not happen again - this is how you earn respect and gratitude from people. Now, if it occurs again, you bring it straight to the top level managers so it can be dealt with appropriately...

You are an idiot and I wouldn't want you managing a toilet for me or my company. If this worker did not have enough respect for their position to show up straight, they are not anyone I could trust. If you cut them slack, all your strong workers will think you are a pussy and will lose whatever respect they had for you. Do not ignore it. The OP should tell their boss AND HR and let the chips fall where they may. It's called being a boss.

Fair enough - that's your opinion; however, I believe there is room for compassion, if the persons past work history warrants it, and by addressing it with her, I would be holding her accountable.
Just out of curiosity, what type of work are you in?
