While I agree

It is in the best interest of the government for the property values (read: property taxes) to remain high

how am I trolling fred? Do you not see a correlation between home values and the amount of boats parked in driveways in your area? It seems like less boats in driveways equals higher property values, would you not agree on that?

Was this voted on by the citizens or just past willy nilly by the council? If its the first, I have no problem with it. If its the latter, then frick them.
I don't have this problem either way since I don't live in that shithole and I have a boat shed at my camp that I leave it in.

The only people with crappy boats in the yard, which led to this rule, are cheaper parts of town.

Are the 'crappy' boats causing the property values to go down, or do you see 'crappy' boats in an area with similar quality housing because that's the kind of boat they can afford?

Is your house pressure washed weekly repainted every 3 months, fully automated internal and out, fit with the absolute latest in energy efficient technology, and perfectly landscaped every week?

Would you be OK with a law mandating that?

but yes or no, do higher end neighborhoods tend to be littered with homes with rusty boats in the driveway?

No doubt. To me, though, property rights come first. There are ways to meet in the middle without being punitive.

probably not

but if the owners started putting their boats in the driveway, do you think that property values would decrease all of a sudden?

Well, I do live on a fixed income and yes, boating, fishing, hunting and dropping a couple grand at the casino is in my budget. I am by all means not an OT baller, but plan way ahead for my retirement. oh, was forced into retirement at 52.

The thing is, if you live in a nice neighborhood, your neighbors dont need laws in place to make sure there homes are kept right. They do it on their own, this boat rule was put in place bc way too many people were not doing their part and covering their boats up and keeping it nice and organized. If they did, this issue would have never come up. I own alot of rental homes in really poor parts of houston and you would be stunned at how terrible the areas appear and the trash people leave in their yards/driveways. Again as I said many times, they should have began by fining people with whatever they deemed was messy driveways, there was no sense in punishing everyone, but apparently they felt the problem was rampant enough to where this was the only solution.

I think it is an easy "red herring" excuse to explain declining property values in aging neighborhoods.

Which would bring prop values down more:

Kenner's new no boat in driveway rule

Surprised thats a new thing. I was always told in Jefferson Parish (unincorporated part) that boats couldn't be stored in front of residence and if you kept the boat on the side of your house, it had to be behind the front edge of the wall on that side of the house.

It seems pretty excessive for the local government to get this far into the issue. I could see cracking down on actual violations that a boat in the driveway could cause... like obstructing the sidewalk or collecting water... I think this should be governed by the HOA/deed restrictions/covenants/etc.

That being said, I don't mind if a neighbor brings their boat or RV to their home for a day or two after trips. I don't particularly care for them being there for long-term storage though.
